Gerald "Jerry" Williams Obituary
Williams, Gerald "Jerry"
1936 - 2018
Gerald R. Williams, 81, passed away on March 17, 2018. He will be forever in the hearts of family: his wife Elizabeth, who was the eternal love of his life, his daughter Tara Leigh Williams of Houston, his son Matthew James Williams of Huatulco, Mexico, his brother Donald Williams of Wadsworth, Ohio, his wonderful grandchildren Elizabeth Grace Henke and Harrison James Henke, and extended family of in-laws, nephews and nieces, and friends. He loved them all. Jerry was born in Canton, Ohio on May 17, 1936. He graduated from Lincoln High School where he played basketball and ran track. He made Eagle Scout at 15. Jerry proudly served his country as a United States Marine. After basic training at Parris Island, he served with the 3rd Marine Regiment in Japan. Following his military commitment, he studied at The Ohio State University, graduating in 1960 with a BSBA in Accounting. He began his career in Columbus with Price Waterhouse & Co. Soon after being certified as a CPA, he transitioned into the financial services sector where he spent the balance of his business career. He spent the early years of this endeavor with his family in Houston, Texas. In 1989, he and Elizabeth returned to Columbus where he became the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Huntington Bankshares. He retired from the company in 1999 and spent his time consulting for Franklin University and other small businesses and organizations. In 2004, the Ohio State Legislature appointed him to the Board of Directors for the Ohio Police and Firefighters Pension Board. Always active in civic affairs, he served as a Trustee of the Houston Grand Opera and the Texas Opera Theatre and in various positions raising funds for the United Way. In Columbus, he spent six years on the board of the Better Breathing Association, including a term as Chairman plus another four years on the board of BalletMet, which included a year heading up development for the ballet. Jerry was a member of Broad Street Presbyterian Church, Rocky Fork Hunt and Country Club, and the President's Club at Ohio State University. In 2013, he was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Leadership Award from the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State. His family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful group of caregivers at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Hospice Home Care for their support. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to SCHEODINGER NORTHEAST. The family will receive friends at the East Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 E Broad St., Columbus, on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 10-11AM with a memorial service conducted by Pastors Amy Miracle and Ann Palmerton to begin at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in his name to the Gerald R. and Mary E. Williams Scholarship Fund for undergraduate honors students at the Fisher College of Business or to the Semper Fi Fund for wounded soldiers and their families. Semper fi, Dad.
