James Earl Gates, 85, of Baltimore, Ohio, died January 25, 2018. He was born December 14, 1932 in Cambridge, Ohio. After graduating from Cambridge High School, he enlisted in the United States Marines and served during the Korean War. Following his active duty, he served the State of Ohio as a state highway patrol officer. He graduated from the Ohio State University with an accounting degree and practiced certified public accounting until he retired. Jim was very active in his church and community. He served in various capacities at his church and served on the Liberty Union School Board for 8 years. He loved gardening and farming, and spent many hours enjoying the outdoors. He was the son of the late John Earl Gates and Julia (Wencek) Gates. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Mary Carolyn (Weller) Gates and two sisters Evelyn Cowgil and Lucille Brining, and brother Eugene Gates. Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia (Brown) Gates; his four children, Melanie Carrel (Mark), Molly Parkhill (Kevin), John Gates, and Mary Beth Dewese (David); and three step children, Christy Smigielski (Andrew), Scott Van Schoyck (Kristen) and Carrie Kinsey (Michael); and his 23 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 2 pm at Saint Michael's United Church of Christ, 2495 Bickel Church Road, Baltimore, Ohio, 43105.
