Palmer, James 1946 - 2017
James Malcolm Palmer V, 71, beloved husband of 48 years to Barbara E. Palmer, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2017. Mr. Palmer was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on May 9, 1946; son of the late James and Marion Palmer. Mr. Palmer graduated from Torrington High School in Torrington, Connecticut in 1964. He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry in 1968. While attending college, Mr. Palmer joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon and served as fraternity President. After graduation, Mr. Palmer was hired by the Proctor and Gamble Company. Mr. Palmer entered the Army in 1969 as 2nd Lieutenant of the 7/31st Artillery and was honorably discharged in 1971 promoted to 1st Lieutenant. His service was recognized with two Army Commendation Medals and the 1st Oak Leaf Cluster. Mr. Palmer returned to Proctor and Gamble working in the company's manufacturing plants, corporate health and safety divisions, and human resources until 1999. Mr. Palmer was recognized for his leadership and was awarded the Cameron Award Medal (1983/84, 1984/85), the William M. Babington Memorial Award (1994), and the Ohio Governor's Award of Excellence in Worker' Compensation (1997). Post retirement, Mr. Palmer continued in private consulting work. Mr. Palmer enjoyed any strategic conversation and was the family's genealogy expert highlighted by his involvement representing the family as a Civil War re-enactor at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Winchester, Virginia. In addition to his wife, Mr. Palmer is survived by three children, Edward B. Palmer and his wife Lori of Milford, Ohio; Elizabeth A. McCluskey and husband Jeff of Concord, North Carolina; and Margaret Palmer of Loveland, Ohio. Mr. Palmer is survived by four grandsons, Jonathon J. Gerding, Benjamin J. Gerding, William P. McCluskey, and Quinlan T. McCluskey. Mr. Palmer is survived by his three brothers, Joseph Palmer and his wife Shirley of Medinah, Illinois, David Palmer and his wife Ellie of Hamilton, New Jersey, and John Palmer of Torrington, Connecticut. Mr. Palmer is survived by his four sisters, Mary Anne Maher and husband Ed of Avon, Conneticut, Susan Pelchat and husband John of Torrington, Connecticut, Jean Chapin and husband George of Torrington, Connecticut, and Joan Palmer of Torrington, Connecticut. Mr. Palmer is survived by several nieces and nephews and a cousin to many. In addition to his parents, Mr. Palmer was predeceased by his son James M. Palmer VI and his brother William Palmer. Burial services will immediately follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona located at 23029 North Cave Creek Road in Phoenix, Arizona 85024.
