Whitney, James 1943 - 2017
James William Whitney, passed away at Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL, on August 2, 2017. He was predeceased by his father and mother Hoyt and Ruth (Bodenmann) Whitney, stepmother Laura (Crawford) Whitney, and wife Margaret Ann (Peggy Geygan) Whitney, the mother of their children. Born August 3, 1934, in Columbus, OH, he was raised in Sunbury, OH, graduated from Big Walnut High School, completed his undergraduate studies at Westminster College (MO), and completed his J.D. at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He was a member of the Florida Bar for 58 years and a member of the Ohio Bar for nearly as long. He practiced law in both states. More recently, he mediated in the Greater Tampa Bay Area, retiring in 2017. As an Eagle Scout, he was awarded the Order of the Arrow. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and volunteered with his fraternity in the Tampa area. He was a public servant and was twice elected as a Delaware County Commissioner. Jim was active in the AA community, enjoying 47 years of sobriety. He proudly retained his Sunbury roots and this past year scored higher than ever before in "The Hoards Dairyman" annual cow judging contest. Jim never met a stranger. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jean (Walters) Whitney (Belleair, FL); children, Kelliann Whitney (Savannah, GA), Patrick Whitney (Columbus, OH), Catherine (George) Hawley (Savannah, GA), and Doug (Cynthia) Whitney (San Diego, CA); stepchildren, Marianne Hudson (Prairie Village, KS) and Liza (Brad) Carver (Lenexa, KS); grandchildren, Gillian Hawley, Stephanie Hawley, George Hawley, Tanner Whitney, and Annie Whitney; step-grandchildren, Steve (Devin) Carver and Johnny Carver; brothers and sister, Dave (Marie) Whitney (Lakeland, FL), Brenda (Boots Vaughn) Whitney (Dayton, OH), and Jack (Marcie) Whitney (Lexington, KY). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Sunbury at 11 am on Friday, November 10, 2017, followed by the Rite of Committal at the Village of Sunbury Cemetery. A reception will be held at Northstar Golf Club following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to in Jim's memory.
