Jean Koppert Obituary
Koppert, Jean
Dr. Jean McClain Koppert Smith of Rocky River departed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, February 11, 2018 after a brief illness. She was born in Mt. Vernon and graduated from Loudonville High School in 1944. Jean was a dedicated educator for 34 years, many of those in the Hilliard City School District teaching 5th grade at Ridgewood Elementary and then as a guidance counselor at Britton Middle School. After obtaining bachelor's and master's degrees in education, she completed her doctoral degree at The Ohio State University, and then coordinated the Freshman Early Experience Program between Hilliard City School District and OSU. Jean and husband Ted were passionate Buckeye fans and season ticket holders for basketball and football. Some of the first words they taught their grandchildren were "Go Bucks!" and spelling O-H-I-O was a must! Jean was a charter member of the Scioto Ridge Methodist Church in Columbus, and then moved with Ted to Sarasota, Florida to live for a number of years in the sunshine. She returned to Rocky River in the Cleveland area seven years ago to be closer to family members, living at the Normandy. Her travels with Ted took her to China, Europe and all over America. She was much loved and respected for her passion in life and will be missed by family and friends. Jean is survived by a large family including Theodore P. Smith, her loving husband; her brother, Franklin E. McClain (Pat); her sister, Linda McClain Jose; and son John Cary Koppert (Donna); daughter Rae Lynn Koppert White (Mark); son Phil Smith (Maria); daughter-in-law Toni Greywitt; and grandchildren: Ryden Harriott, Tyler Harriott (Jennifer); Jack Koppert (Janna); Tanner Koppert; Raleigh McClain Harriott; Brian White; Taylor and Collin Koppert; Tori, Sydney and Ashleigh Smith; and many cousins, nephews and nieces: Dave and Sarah Dowds; Eric Koppert, Eric Dodge, Sam, Jack and Tom Koppert; Bruce Koppert; Jami Segrist Gray (Bob)and Jason Gray; Jill Segrist Charlton (Tom); Kristie Charlton Ray (Adam) and their twins Owen and Asher; Karie Charlton Wheaton (Brian) and Evan Wheaton; Cooper Charlton (Courtney); Pat Dowds Harrison (Dave) and Isabel; Eva Dowds Barnes (Brian) and Charlotte; Mike McClain, James, Adam, Amanda, and Joey McClain and 3 year-old great-grandson Theodore (Theo) Alexander Harriott. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Franklin McClain, and her mother, Genevieve McClain Arnholt, Loudonville, Ohio, first husband Jack C. Koppert, and her son Kevin McClain Koppert. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, May 5th at 1:00 p.m. at LINDSEY FUNERAL HOME, 123 N.
