Joe Balshone Obituary

BALSHONE Joe Balshone, 51, a native Bexley, Ohio resident, died earlier this month in Charlottesville, Virginia, of natural causes. Born Joseph Garth Balshone on November 18, 1956, Joe was the son of Benjamin Balshone, a Columbus businessman, author and owner of the former Lynn Drug Co., who died in 1991. His mother, Miriam "Mimi" Balshone, died in 1973. Joe attended the Columbus Academy and was a graduate of the Winchendon School, in Winchendon, MA. He attended the University of Cincinnati and recently obtained a Master's degree from Capella University where he was preparing to write a PhD dissertation at the time of his death. He was also a certified gemologist having studied at the Gem Institute of America in California. Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a brother Gary Lee Balshone, who died in 1941. Joe is survived by sisters, Lynn B. (Frank D.) Jacobs of Toledo, Ohio and Cathy B. (William) Becze of Sudbury MA.; nephews, David Jacobs of Reno, Nev. and Bruce Jacobs of Dallas, TX; nieces, M. Joy Jacobs-Pilipski of San Diego, CA, and Mia Sylvia Becze of Sudbury; aunt, Ruth Rosenthal of Columbus, uncle, Bert Rosenthal, Palm Harbor, FL.; four cousins, Brent and Lee Rosenthal of Columbus, Mark Rosenthal of Atlanta, GA. and Howard Rosenthal of Safety Harbor, FL.; as well as five grand nephews, Noah, Grant and Parker Jacobs of Dallas and Yarden and Aviv Pilipski of San Diego. Joe was truly a "gentle giant"-big in stature and equally big of heart to all of his family who will miss him greatly. Graveside service was held at the New Agudas Achim Cemetery. Rabbi Areyah Kaltmann officiated. Memorials preferred to the Ronald McDonald House, 555 Childrens Drive West, Columbus, Ohio 43205. Arrangements by THE EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 614-235-3232. As I walk into guzman park and remember the days of old I remember there was one who taught me about Honor, Respect , judgement and loilty. There were a few years I talked, fought and laughed with this warrior, hell he was a "friend", and helped bring Davion back to life on the kesmai severs.
My teacher, my commander my XO and most of all my friend you will be sorely missed knowing you've taught me all you could and it leaves me in waiting till we meet again.

First I would like to give my condolences to the family.
Unfortunately I have been keeping away from the online gaming community for a few years and have just found out of his passing.
As I sat reading his obituary I could not help but think of the first time I set eyes on Joe Balshone. All I can remeber since it has been so long ago is the smile that beemed across his face as I shook his hand.
He will be missed in my heart.

I knew Joe through the Wizard's Gate BBS he ran back in the early 90s when I was in college. Though I'd never met him in person, he was always a friendly and jovial fellow. I wish I'd kept in touch all these years, if only just to say thanks for all the fond memories. R.I.P., Joe.

While I have just found this book, I have known of Joe's passing for some time. Allow me to offer my condolences to his family.

I had the honor of fighting against him in Battletech as well as serving under him in the game Aliens Online. But most importantly, I had the greatest honor of being able to call him my friend. He will be missed.

Belated condolences, although I don't know him personally, I did drop against him and his clan many times online in MPBT. He was one of those that loved and breathed in the game. For that, he made a mark on thousands of players over the years. Joe, you will be missed

I just found out about this today. Joe and I talked every three months or so over the years. I talked to him in early March and when July came and went I tried calling and found the number disconnected. I will miss my friend. He was always there for me. I wish I could have been there for him.

I just heard through GIA of Joe's passing. We had talked occasionally about his new PhD program. We had a lot of common interests, I'll surely miss our conversations. He was way too young to leave us.

Hard loss this one. Joe was a special individual. He helped to build entire communities of friends that have stayed together for almost 2 decades. He was one of the originals and one of the lynch pins through out it all. Anyone who does any multiplayer online gaming owes Joe a massive debt of gratitude. For those of us that knew him in person, we lost our best friend and teacher.

Thanks for everything Joe.

My belated condolences to Joe's family. I think Joe would appreciate (and throw out an acidic-yet-gentle quip about) how HIS online community has drawn together--for many, after years of drifting apart and separation--as news of his passing makes its rounds.

He left such a positive mark on many people's lives with his wisdom, humor, and caring. His stories were irreverent and whimsical. So was Joe.

I'm honored to have called him friend and the world is a little less bright with him gone.

Via con Dios, Joe.

Joe was a great guy - he always had something nice to say about you, and something positive to say to you. I could certainly learn from his example. Joe started me down a path I don't think I'd have considered if not for him. There were many great memories, experiences and friends made as a result.

I was very saddened to hear about Joe's death. He was the sort of man who took a genuine interest in whoever he was talking to, and who played an active role in helping those around him realize their potential.

As a friend, Joe could keep a secret, conspire to do great things, share a laugh and give you an honest assessment of any situation.

Karen and I enjoyed knowing you, buddy - I hope you can finally get some decent rest.

I'm sorry to hear of Joe's passing. Joe and I worked very close together at Kesmai. He was a great advisor and friend, and was instrumental in my growth as a young professional. Joe was always pressing me to grow and to do bigger and better things. This I will never forget - and is a testament to his impact on others around him.

He was well loved and respected by the MPBT crew and a lot of online gamers. I learned a lot about the industry from him.

We have just found out about Joe's death and are deeply saddened. He was a man of great kindness and joy, with strong opinions and a wicked sense of humor. He has been part of our lives for nearly 20 years and I can't imagine how much more pale that life would have been had we not known him.

To Joe's family and friends,

I send you my belated condolences on Joe's passing. I just learned of Joe's passing just this afternoon.

Joe was one of the finest people I ever had the opportunity to meet. We shared a long friendship based on a common love for a community of gaming enthusiasts. I thought of him as one of my steadfast friends in our participation in that community.

I have fond memories of our time spent together laughing and enjoying our time spent together both online and in person over the years.

I will miss him greatly. He was a man of honor and dedication that many of our community grew to respect and love over the years. I have wonderful memories of our times spent together over the 16 years that I had the fortune to call him my friend.

Daer Balshone Family,
I am thinking of Winding Hollow and all the times Joe protected me from all the Big kids! He was very sweet and each time I saw him we would have great talks of our parents and how we had the best times at Winding Hollow in the pool and at the Snack bar. I think of your family often, your parents and mine having great times on trips, playing golf and just being together!
