John Anthony "Jack" Dunn Obituary
Dunn, John Anthony "Jack"
1929 - 2017
John Anthony "Jack" Dunn, 88, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at Westminster Thurber. Beloved husband and father, he passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Nan (St. James) Dunn; his daughters, Elizabeth and Joan; and his sons, Jonathan, Geoffrey and Anthony; sister-in-law, Beverly St. James; and many nieces and nephews. John was born on January 27, 1929 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of John and Jean Dunn, who emigrated to the US later that year. He grew up in Queens, New York, attended Catholic schools, and graduated from St. John's University. He served overseas as a U.S. Army Infantryman during the Korean War. John began his career as a newspaper copy boy and reporter for the Brooklyn Eagle, later doing public relations for the utilities industry, and finally for American Electric Power. "Jack" was known for his great smile and quick wit, and for bringing an artistic sensibility to every aspect of his work. Later in his career, John earned his MBA from Ohio University. A true family man, he loved photography, reading, writing short stories and plays, enjoyed a nap on the train, and being at home with his wife and children. He and Betty Nan were married in 1955, after being introduced by Betty's brother, and John's fellow reporter, Alan "Dickie" St. James, during a trip to the beach. They started a family and made their home in Amityville, New York, later moving to Lake Mohawk, New Jersey and finally to Lancaster, Ohio. In retirement, they spent many summers in Seaside Park, New Jersey, where they continued to enjoy being together on the beach. John was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Helen Ferguson, sisters-in-law Joan, Faith and Ruth, and brothers-in-law Harry, Alan and Harold. A private service was held on December 30, 2017, at Schoedinger Midtown Chapel, with interment at Union Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2018, in the Westminster Thurber Chapel, 717 Neil Ave, Columbus, OH 43215.
