John Saveson Obituary
Saveson, John
1923 - 2017
John Edward Saveson, died early Sunday morning, Sept. 10, 2017, at home, after a long illness. He was born on August 20, 1923 to Irwin Leroy and Blanche Clouse Saveson, and grew up in the Plain Township and Gahanna area where his parents and grandparents had always lived. During John's school years, the family moved to New Lexington, Caldwell, Shepard, and Hamilton, Ohio, and even to Bedford, Indiana, following his father's job in the Soil Conservation Service. John attended Capital Univ. until enlisting in the Navy in 1944, at which time he was sent to Denison Univ. in the Naval Officer Training Program. He spent the rest of the war in the Pacific "theater," transporting troops. After the war, he returned to Denison, where he graduated (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1947. He met his future wife, Marilyn Buehrer, in graduate school at the Univ. of Chicago. They were married in 1951 and spent the next 4 years in England, where they received their doctorates from the University of Cambridge. After returning to the States, John taught English at the Univ. of Maryland, Valparaiso Univ. in Indiana, and lastly at Mansfield Univ. in Pennsylvania, where he was chairman of his dept. He retired early to return to Ohio, to the house which his great-great-grandfather Clouse had built on the outskirts of New Albany in 1861. Here he became a gentleman farmer, award-winning environmentalist, local historian and writer. He established conservation wetlands on the historic family farm. His writings include two scholarly books on Joseph Conrad, two novels, two books on his family history, and many pamphlets and articles on local history. He was an active member of the Columbus Maennerchor and the New Albany-Plain Township Historical Society, and had many friends in these organizations as well as from the many places where he had lived and the universities where he had taught. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn "Marty"; his sons, Skye and John "Jay" and Jay's wife, Sheila Murphy; also by daughter, Catherine Saveson, and her husband, Rick Otten; also 4 grandchildren, Gretchen and Eben Saveson, and Willow and Liam Otten; and John's sister and brother-in-law, Joey and Dick Thomas and their family; and sister-in-law, Kathy Buehrer Baxter. The family will hold a private remembrance reunion later this fall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbus Maennerchor (976 S. High St., Columbus, OH 43206), the Ohio Environmental Council (1145 Chesapeake Ave., Suite 1, Columbus, OH 43212) or the New Albany-Plain Township Historical Society (P.O. Box 219, New Albany, OH).
