Kessler, OP Dominican Sister of Peace Mary Carol Kessler, OP, died at Mohun Health Care Center (Columbus, OH) on Friday, August 2, 2013. She was born in Lancaster, OH, on February 20, 1921. Sr. Mary Carol was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Sarah (Snider) Kessler, brothers Marcellus, William, and Thomas and sisters Elizabeth Franklin, Ruth Kessler, and Sr. Vivian Kessler, OP. She is survived by sisters, Sr. Venard Kessler, OP, and Agnes Cramer of Lancaster; and many nieces and nephews; she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Sr. Mary Carol entered the Novitiate of the former Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1940 and made her Profession of Vows in 1942. She earned a BS from the College of St. Mary of the Springs (now Ohio Dominican University) and an MS in music education from Notre Dame University. In the Columbus Diocese, she ministered at Holy Name GS (1943-45, 1950-55); St. Francis GS, Newark (1955-56); St. Mary GS, Lancaster (1961-63); Blessed Sacrament GS, Newark (1963-64); Holy Trinity GS, Somerset (1970-75); and Holy Spirit GS (1975-76). She also ministered in Steubenville, OH, and in Michigan, New Mexico, New York, and Pennsylvania. As music teacher, glee club moderator, and choir director, Sr. Mary Carol introduced her students to the joys of song and instrument. Besides teaching, she also served as a pastoral minister and guided many organizations in the parish. She especially enjoyed delivering baskets of food to the needy. Sr. Mary Carol served her Dominican congregation as director of facilities (1993-97) before entering Mohun Health Care Center in 1998, where she served as organist for many years. The Reception of the Body will take place at the Columbus Motherhouse on Tuesday, August 6, at 3 p.m. Evening Prayer of Office for the Dead will be held at 4:45 p.m. with viewing continuing until 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, August 7, at 9 a.m. followed by burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
