Mary Lower Obituary
Lower Mary Lower, age 93, a long-time resident of Powell, Ohio, passed away peacefully Monday, April 10, 2017 at Brookdale Nursing Home in Westerville, Ohio. She was born November 25, 1923 in West Winfield, PA. Mary graduated from Toronto High School in 1942 and then went on to graduate from Good Samaritan Nursing Hospital in 1945. She worked as a registered nurse at Wheeling Steel before retiring to be at home to raise her family. Mary was a long-time member and Elder of Liberty Presbyterian Church. She was actively involved with Eastern Star, Past Matron University Chapter #462 and Past Master's Ladies. Mary loved being outdoors, tending to their vegetable garden, planting and growing numerous varieties of hostas and wildflowers. She was also a superb cook who made noodles and baked goods from scratch and once appeared on a popular WBNS-10TV cooking show. Mary had a wonderful marriage of 54 years with her husband Michael before his passing in 2002. During their time together she and Michael enjoyed spending their winters in Hollywood, FL. Additionally, they traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Europe, and Australia. Preceded in death by her parents Andrew and Mary Demko, husband Michael Lower, sister Irene Smolak, and two brothers. She is survived by sons, Michael of North Charleston, South Carolina and David (Karen) of Powell, Ohio; two grandsons, Chad (Mandee) of Lake Jackson, Texas and Jason (Jennifer) of Lewis Center, Ohio; grandchildren, Ethan, Jack, Geralda, William, and Joshua; sisters, Helen Demko of Byesville, Ohio, Veronica (Albert) Dieckman of Corinth, Texas, Theresa Demko of Toronto, Ohio, Patricia (Richard) Balser of Toronto, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the highly skilled and caring Brookdale nursing staff and hospice team. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, April 14 from 2-3 p.m. at Liberty Presbyterian Church (Old Chapel), 7080 Olentangy River Road (Route 315). Pastor Becky Hart officiating.
