Maudie Simpson Obituary
Simpson Maudie Simpson, passed away peacefully, with all her family by her side, in a beautiful setting at The Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio after complications from a broken hip. Born in Pikeville, KY on May 23, 1924, daughter of Epperson and Nancy Jane (Worrix) Sloan, she lived most of her life in Columbus. She was preceded in death by husband Clifford Simpson (1975), her partner of 10 years Dwight Smith, step daughters Ann Lyons and Penny Perchan, sisters, brothers and many family members she so deeply loved. Maudie was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was a VERY strong woman that survived losing a kidney from an injury as a teenager, colon cancer in her 40s, and breast cancer in her 80s. She developed vascular dementia in 2014 due to complications from congestive heart failure. She always believed you needed to count on #1 (Yourself). She told her grandchildren to work hard every day if they wanted things and success in life. Maudie lived a full life, was very mobile until recent years, and even drove her car until her late 80's. In Maudie's adult life, she was a loving wife, mother, step-mother, and grandmother. Her first job was a full time homemaker. After her children were older, she worked as a full time seamstress at Walker's and Dunhill's Dept. Stores. She then joined the seamstress staff at The Ohio State Highway Patrol on November 29, 1976, altering and repairing their uniforms; retiring on May 9 1986, she started a home sewing business doing alterations for family and friends until 2009. Cooking and sewing were just a few of her favorite things. She loved country music, attending country music concerts, playing cards, dancing with friends, cooking for loved ones, and traveling to Nashville, West Virginia and Florida. Her favorite part of life was family. She had a very small immediate family, but a very large extended family, and remained close with all of them until she became an Angel to watch over everyone she left behind. Her grandchildren called her "Granny". She knew she was loved to pieces by every one of them and would always say that God blessed her with a beautiful family and life. Her family will miss her beautiful smile, laughter, jokes, cooking, sewing and the hilarious one liners she loved to share. She was the life of the party. She is survived by her daughter/best friend and caregiver, Hester Betts; son-in-law, Larry Betts; step daughter, Dixie Harvey; step sons, Stumpy and Charles Simpson; her two dogs, Buddy and Bonnie; grandchildren, Pam (Vince) Oddi, Michael Wesley, Josh Oddi, Robin Milonakis, (furry grand dog, Max), Larry (Keri) Betts, Hadley Betts, Rick Saulters, Guy Lee Harvey, Jeff Harvey and Veronica Augustine; several great grandchildren; nieces, Carrie (Everett) May and Marie (Tom) Hurt; nephew, Jerry (Sarah) Simpson; great nieces; great nephews; several cousins and several friends. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 4, 2017 from 2-5 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna, where service will be held Monday at 10 a.m., with Mark Dettmer officiating.
