Merlin Hoops Obituary
Hoops, Merlin
1926 - 2017
The Rev. Dr. Merlin Henry Hoops, age 91, entered into life eternal on December 20, 2017. He was born October 2, 1926 at home on the family farm in Byron, Nebraska to the late Henry Christopher and Anna (Meyer) Hoops. A graduate of Byron High School, Merlin went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Capital University, Masters of Divinity from Trinity Lutheran Seminary and a PhD in New Testament and Greek from the University of Hamburg in Germany. In 1960, Dr. Hoops accepted a call to teach at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. He was a dedicated professor and pastor in the Ohio Synod until his retirement in 1996. He faithfully cared for his wife and daughter as long as he was physically able. He also served on the Franklin County board of MRDD and was active in the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Always a fan of Nebraska football, an invitation to go out to dinner meant that the Cornhuskers had been victorious. (Go Big Red!). Dr. Hoops is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Elizabeth Barbara (Obermeyer) Hoops, of Wesley Ridge Retirement Community in Reynoldsburg, OH; daughters Amy Beth Hoops of Grove City, OH and Pamela (Doug) Ritterling of Anderson, SC; grandchildren Maren Kay (Zacharias) Fleer, Jenna Sophia (Timothy) Marquardt and Landon Douglas Marvin Ritterling; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Dykman of Kansas City and Gertrude "Trudy" (Delvin) Hutton of Blair, NE; numerous special nieces, nephews, extended family, colleagues and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Martin Hoops, Esther Loontjer, Lola Kirchhoff and Vernon Hoops. Visitation will be from 2-4pm and 6-8pm Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus, OH 43232. Funeral Service 11am Thursday, December 28, 2017 at TRINITY LUTHERAN SEMINARY, 2199 E. Main St., Bexley, OH 43209 where family will greet friend from 10-11am; The Rev. David Shull, presiding.
