Paul F. Gatens, eldest son of Paul and Kathleen Gatens, age 73, died on Friday, November 3rd from complications of Multiple system atrophy. He graduated from Charleston Catholic High School in Charleston, West Virginia (1961), Saint Louis University, in St. Louis, Missouri with a Bachelor of Science degree (1965), and a medical degree from The University of Missouri College of Medicine in Columbia, Missouri (1969). He completed a medical internship at University of Texas, San Antonio (1970) and a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Missouri Columbia (1973). Paul remained in Columbia working as a faculty in the PM&R department at the University of Missouri. He served 8 years in the US Army, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He then worked as a staff physiatrist at The Ohio State University Medical Center Dodd Hall and became the medical director of the rehabilitation unit at Mount Carmel West Medical Center, Columbus Ohio. Most recently, he worked as a consultant for Care Works and as a medical expert for social security hearings. Paul is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Kathleen Gatens, and sister Jan Keene. He will be missed by Cindy, his wife of 46 years; sons, Brendan (Sophie) and Brett (Mary); grandson, Teddy; brother, Tim (Mary); brothers-in-law, Larry Keene, Kyle and Howard Groves; niece, Kinsey Groves; and nephew, Jason Keene (Gina) and their children, Blake, Morgan and Mia. Paul was the ultimate Buckeye fan and coached both of his sons as they grew up playing basketball, baseball and football. Most important to him, was his family. He was especially loved by his grandson, Teddy, who called him "Grand Paul". Paul preferred his death to be private, so there will be no funeral or memorial service. Family will welcome friends and neighbors at Cindy and Paul's home at Friendship Village of Dublin. Address: 6732 Birchton Court, Dublin, Ohio 43017 on Sunday, November 5th from 2-4 pm.
