Richard Funkhouser Obituary
Funkhouser, Richard
Richard Daniel Brunk Funkhouser, age 81, passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2017. Dick was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in nearby Wheaton where he excelled in sports. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and graduated from the U.S. Airborne School, proudly serving in the 82nd Airborne "All American" Division as a member of the Airborne Test Board Detachment. After the Army, Dick attended the University of Illinois on the GI Bill. A proud member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, he would drive by the fraternity house on visits to the U of I with family in tow. While in college, a chance blind date would lead to 59 years of marriage to his wife, Lucy. They eventually settled in Upper Arlington with prior stops in Boston and Hamilton, Ohio. Dick came to Columbus to start his insurance agency with New England Life and after years in insurance and banking eventually retired from National City Bank. He kept active in retirement with Option Trading and was a regular at the brokerage house. Dick was preceded in death by his loving parents Oscar Brunk Funkhouser and Helen Mitchell Funkhouser. He is survived by his wife, Lucy; children, Ann (Tom) Ostendorf; Brian (Cindie) Funkhouser, Douglas (Stephanie) Funkhouser; and grandchildren, Nicole Ruh, her fiancé, Matt Bush, Olivia and Grace Masters, their father Dennis Masters, Jacob, Alexa, Nathan and Morgan Funkhouser; and great grandchildren, Ava, Braelynn, and Rexton. Private Graveside Services were held at his family plot in Acacia Park Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois on August 9, 2017. The Funkhouser family asks that contributions be made to OhioHealth Hospice so other families may benefit from their care.
