Robert Kuhns Obituary
Kuhns Robert Kuhns, my dad, died Thursday May 4, 2017. He was the dapper old guy driving his go-go scooter way too fast through the hallways of First Community Village where he lived for the past 9 years. He moved there from his home on Elgin Rd. where his love for model trains and trolleys was evident in both the basement and the garden. There were other things too, the occasional antique or odd automobile, and the great neighbors. But by far the greatest love in that house was for his wife, Susan. Dad grew up in Dayton, Ohio on Morton Ave., attended Patterson School, then Fairview High School, and a few years at the Ohio State University before going into the Army. He was stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Dad had a talent for drawing and painting, as a youth he took art classes at the Dayton Art Institute, and also worked a short time in graphic design before joining in his father's business after the Army. National Heat Treating was the metallurgical treatment business that his father started after moving to Columbus from Dayton. It was not big or impressive work, but dad worked hard to grow it and it provided just enough for his family. Vacations in the early years were summer trips to Lakeside with dear friends, after retirement it was winters in Fountain Hills, Arizona. In-between there were trips to ride railroads, attend Antique Automobile Club of America and RROC events, and Art Tours with the Columbus Museum of Art. There were times for wild rides in vineyards, grand costumes for the Beaux Arts Balls, and for building timeless friendships in Couples Circle. And so these are the seeds to the many stories of my dad's life that I never got tired of hearing and now remain vivid in my mind's eye, these are the gifts from my father to me, his daughter. Preceding him in death were his wife of 64 years Susan Linch Kuhns, his mother and father D. Leonard and Mildred L. Kuhns, great grandmother Maggie Locke, great uncle Alonzo T. Wills, favorite cousins William Kuhns and Edward M. Kuhns. He is survived by his twin children, Lucy Kuhns of Neuchatel, Switzerland and J. Peter Kuhns of La Jolla, California; and cousin, Marge Kuhns of Dayton, Ohio. The many years of dedication by Anne Holliday is treasured. The skilled and loving care for my father that was the daily work of Renee MacCartney and Trish Gartman turned into something so much greater than words can describe. And there is so much gratitude to the unsung heroes: Jim and Donna, Dave, Jane, Rick and Bill, Wendy, Gina, Charlene, Rhonda, Jill, Gerald and so many others. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Green Lawn Cemetery, 1000 Greenlawn Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43223. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at National Church Residences First Community Village, Burkhart Chapel, 1800 Riverside Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43212.
