Ruth Eileen Blower Obituary
Blower Ruth Eileen (Blower) Kassewitz, 84, died April 18, 2013 in Miami, FL of complications from Parkinson's disease. She moved to Miami in 1956, where she is remembered as an active and enthusiastic community booster and contributor who enjoyed a host of friends. Born in Columbus in 1928, her K-12 education was at Upper Arlington, where she was also active in the First Community Church. She graduated from Ohio State University with a BA in Journalism. Her 40-year professional communications career began at the Ohio Fuel Gas Company where she was copywriter in charge of print media. She moved to Miami at age 26 to provide advertising and public relations services for a range of institutions, most notably Miami's Metro-Dade government and UM/Jackson Memorial Med Ctr. She served on many Miami-area civic boards and was active in her profession, serving as president of the S. Florida Public Relations Society of America as well as on the national board of the PRSA. For 23 years until his death in 1984, she was wed to Jack Kassewitz, a popular 36 year editor and columnist with the Miami News. She was also preceded in death by her mother and father Helen (Daub) and E. Wallet Blower, and by her brother Richard Blower. Survivors include nieces and nephew, Walter Blower, Beth (Mike) Amend, their children, Noel, Mickey and Sarah; sister-in-law, Kitty Blower; first cousins, John (Sharon) Purdy, Mary Kay Purdy, Karen (Dr. Ron) Ward and Melanie Spycher; and many dear friends. There will be a memorial service at Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove, FL on May 12. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the E.W. Blower Memorial Fund in c/o the Dade Community Foundation, 200 S. Biscayne Blvd., #505, Miami, FL 33131 to honor her beloved father and to support pediatric research at the UM School of Medicine.
