We're writing from Crested Butte, Colorado. Today, Mike Eherdt with projectamericarun.com, placed an American flag with Ryan's name attached to it on a yellow ribbon, at mile marker 26 on Kebler Pass Road near where we live and enjoy our most sacred time hiking and fishing and relishing God's beauty.

We chose mm 26 as it is the day of my birthday in June. Tonight our hearts have been filled with the exceptional and heartwarming messages about Ryan from family and friends and strangers all across the globe.

My husband went to high school in Westerville in the early 70's so he was very familiar with Gahanna and the high school there.

Our message to you is that we will remember Ryan everytime we pass that mile marker and pray for you as parents, friends and loved ones in your great loss. We will also remember to pray for all of our military wherever they are serving and the huge sacrifice family and friends make.

Kebler Pass is only open during the summer so we will eventually bring the flag home and would be happy to send it along to you if you wish.

We don't know Mr. Eherdt, but understand he used to live here in Crested Butte. His tribute to the fallen soldiers is quite extraordinary. We are at 8,885 feet in town, and at least that going over the pass into the West Elk Mountains.

Thank you and God Bless your family, especially this Fourth of July!

Ryan, I remembered vividly arriving at your parents' home hours after I was notified. That began a series of very long and emotional days.

I don't think I have shared this poem with you. My son wrote this sitting in an Iraqi desert in 2003. You could have written this as well, as I believe any Marine could. Kris would want you to have a copy of this.

God Bless, Ryan. You are in our hearts and prayers as is your family who I know you watch over.

BROKEN PROMISES, Sgt. Kristopher Benson, 3/7/Weapons/81s

Please forgive the promises I must break
The dates and holidays I will not make
But our freedom has come under attack
And it is my duty to fight back.

It may be a while before I can write
But know it is your love that is my will to fight.
Endless days and nights in the field
A small sacrifice as our nation's shield.

Those many tired and hungry nights
Betrayed only by a pale moon's light
Side by side in the trenches we share
Some will give all with none to spare.

By our will and with God's grace
Our sons will never have to take our place
I remind myself it is for their sake
Please forgive me the promises I must break.

From mountains across deserts to the sea
I am a defender of liberty
I have seen pain and suffering in a million faces
In distant lands and faraway places.

Where evil hides you will find me there
With pride and honor in the uniform I wear
Alas our cause is the rightgeous one
History will be our judge when all is done.

If called to give the full measure of my devotion
It will not be for a senseless notion
The men I lead are bold and brave
And medals cannot tell of all they gave.

For as I serve with my brothers
We've sworn to lay down our lives for others
And I will be here to fight as long as it may take
Please forgive me the promises I must break.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ryan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Hey Ryan!!! Gosh, we all miss you so much, but I know you are in a better place now. I'm at work and googled your name to see what kind of articles I could find, and this came up. Of course you will be right there will us all on that day, and we think about you all the time! Thank you for everything you have done for this family and this country. I love you, Ryan!!

Hey Miller, it's been over a year, and I miss your friendship more and more. You were my best friend at St. Matts and best friend at DeSales, and I will see you in heaven soon enough. You are a true hero and the person I pray to when I am down and need help. God Bless, and don't worry, I'll make sure no one messes with Tara. You're a brother for life, and death, and I'll never forget how good of a friend you were to me.

Hi, Ryan. It's hard to believe that one year ago today our Lord called you home. It seems like only yesterday. Although we still feel the pain and sorrow, our faith reminds us that you are up above, smiling down on us all. Know that your dad, mom and Tara cherish each time you "visit" them. What a beautiful sign to them of your love and concern for them, and a testament to how much you felt their love for you.
Thank you, again, Ryan for giving your life for us and the rest of America. You will NEVER be forgotten. We love you,

Ryan, you know that my wife and I had a great lunch with your parents last Saturday. You also you that I'm trying to write a memorial article for the newspaper for September. That's tough, kid. I've talked to a number of your buddies, and their affection and respect for you is difficult for them to put into words. But they are trying and will get back to me. Your Dad has done a great job with the golf tournament, and I've been adding my two cents. And I've talked to your grandfather. It's been almost a year, but the emotions still run high. The scholarship in your name will make a difference in young people's lives. This is an enduring contribution, and I thank you for your service and sacrifice for this nation. If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Hi, Ryan. I just posted some more pictures of you to your photo album so others could see what a wonderful, great looking young man you were. I think about you daily. Your mom, dad and Tara are doing well. As are Grandpa and Grandma B. Still hard for them though, but believing you are at peace in heaven eases the pain. And it helps them to not worry about you knowing that you were greeted by your Grandpa and Grandma Miller, great Grandparents, other family relatives, and your fellow fallen angels. “Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

I didn't really know Ryan or Tara very well, except that he was a senior when I was a freshman. But when I heard about him, it still affected me because we are both part of DeSales and it is a family and even though I didn't know him, it's still hard because he is a part of DeSales. I'm praying for the Miller family and I hope that they can make it through the holidays during this rough time. Semper Fi and God bless.

Ed, Mary, and Tara,

We just learned today of Ryan's tragedy. With great sorrow and much prayer, we offer our heartfelt sympathies for the loss of Ryan. Our families were so close when we lived in Gahanna in the early 90's when the children were so small, so innocent, so safe. There was so much energy, fun, and full of life in the children.

No words can express our sorrow . . . . just tragic . . .

May Ryan eternally rest in the peace of our Lord.

I extend condolences on behalf of the members of VFW Post 4760, Sequim, Washington.
In the current issue of the VFW magazine, there are two full pages listing the names of about 150 of our comrades KIA between 24 August and 13 October, 2006. Pvt. Miller was among them.
As a former Private of Marines, I felt especially sorrowful when I saw Pvt. Miller among those who made the supreme sacrifice.... Semper Fi.
Also, as one who has lost a loved one in battle, I can empathise with the Miller family's grief. My mother lived to be 99 years old, and not a day went by that she didn't think of my brother, killed on Aug. 17, 1943 over Germany.
Words are little consolation, I know, but please be aware that strangers such as myself do truly grieve for your boy, and all others lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our prayers are with you.

Dear Miller Family,
Even though we have never met I feel as if we are a part of a "family". My daughter's fiancee was killed in Iraq by an IED on Oct. 3, 2005. It is my prayer that you will feel God holding you as close to His heart as He has held my family this past year. May you feel God's peace and comfort as you travel down such a difficult road.
In God's Grace

Miller Family,

You have my deepest sympathy at the lose of such a great man.May God bless and keep you.

To the Family of Pvt. Ryan E. Miller:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

Its so sad to hear my hero is gone.

To leave here without a goodbye or so long.

I cry, not of loss but I never got to meet him.

A warrior saint whose heart could not be beaten.

My hero, a stranger, a friends relative.

I didnt know him but hes changing the way I live.

My hero is fallen and my eyes arent getting wetter, because I know he is in a place far better.

So I salute this man and I will pray , because I hope I get to meet my hero one day.

No one can conceive of the depth and permanence of your loss other than the parents of other fallen young soldiers. Though I never had the pleasure of meeting Ryan, I remember the pride in your voice and eyes every time you talked about him. We are deeply, deeply saddened for you all.

Ed, Mary, Tara and family,

You know that through this year we have established a bond which time will never diminish. Ryan was deeply special to us, and his life was a gift to all of us and has touched people he has never met as you will see in these guest book postings.

Time will never really erase the pain you feel now, but will put it into perspective and that is both good and necessary.

We thank your son for his service to his country and the leadership that he provided. Lance Corporal Ryan E. Miller was indeed a leader, and thank God we have people like that . . . and families as strong as yours.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.

Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,

God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

All of us at Beaver Head Ct. share in Ed and Mary’s loss. Ryan was a kind and caring man. He showed everyone who knew him kindness and love. We are so thankful to have gotten to know such a fine young man. He will be with us always.

Please know that I am deeply sorry for the loss of Pvt. Ryan E. Miller.

As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly,

and as a sister, who has lost a brother to war,

I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing.

The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.

Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.

Ever so softly and slowly, time does heal.

May Ryan Rest Safely, in the Mighty Arms of God and know that he WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

I pray that God's Loving Comfort and Grace will be with the Miller family.

I am the sister, of such a Young Hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

Surely He hath borne our grief, and carried our sorrow.

Isaiah 53:4

With each new day, may the Lord restore your soul and, through His love, give you the strength to go on.

You are in my prayers.

Mary and Family.

I am very sorry for your loss. I have heard so many wonderful things about Ryan from my sister and from reading all the things people have written he truly touched so many lives. This week my son had to revise an article in the paper and he was touched by your son's dedication that he picked the story on your son. We thank Ryan for being such a brave American, may he rest in peace.

Ed, Mary and Tara,

As neighbors watching Ryan grow up, the last couple of weeks have been unreal. Be proud that Ryan was serving his country and volunteered to do so without hesitation. Our world has lost a hero.
