Obituary Condolences

Burtner Sheldon Kephart Burtner, Jr., age 88, of Canal Winchester, died Saturday, July 1, 2017 at OSU East Hospital. Born November 18, 1928 in Canal Winchester to the late Sheldon Kephart and Ethel (Shoemaker) Burtner, he was a 1946 graduate of Canal Winchester High School and received his BS in electrical engineering from Ohio University in 1952. After serving in the U.S. Army, he built a distinguished career at North American Rockwell for 30 years. After retiring, he discovered there wasn't enough golf to fill his days, and worked another decade at Teledyne Brown Engineering for 5 years, and Spartan Technology for 6 years. He was a civic leader, serving on the Canal Winchester School Board from 1967-75, contributed as a member of the Canal Winchester Lions Club and Canal Winchester Area Historical Society, and was a life-long member of Hope United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. Sheldon is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Joann Burtner; children, Sheldon "Kep" Burtner, III, Scott (Michele) Burtner, Eric (Tracey) Burtner, Janet Gonzalez; his grandchildren, Brittany, Justin (Sara), Christopher (Natalie), Ryan (Jennifer), Jaime (Charles), Jarrod, Michelle, Aaron (Sara), Audrey, Raymond, Alexis, and Matthew brought him tremendous joy; his great-grandchildren, Cameron, Kaylee, Logan, Ava, Mason, Blake, Nolan, Kilee, Greyson, Justin, and Max were icing on the cake. Preceded in death by his sister Barbara Hawk. Friends may visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester. Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hope United Methodist Church, 83 E. Columbus St., Canal Winchester, with Pastor Ben Foulk officiating. Interment Union Grove Cemetery.
