Thelma Jean (Hollback) Kyer

Obituary Condolences

Kyer Thelma Jean (Hollback) Kyer, age 83, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017, due to dementia and other health issues. She was born in South Webster, OH on January 7, 1934. She was a resident of West Park Nursing Center of Columbus, and had been a nearly 60-year resident of Grove City, OH. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents John and Ila (Sparks) Hollback, three siblings, and by her beloved husband Marvin, to whom she was married for 55 years before his passing in 2008. Thelma had a fun-loving, outgoing personality and a wonderful sense of humor. She was known for sending many a card and letter adorned with her beautiful script handwriting. She loved singing and dancing, and could sing a little ditty on cue for almost any occasion or subject. A long-time member of Grove City United Methodist Church, she was also a 25-plus year member of the church quilting group, where she enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship and began the standing tradition of singing a rarely known Thelma-style birthday song for any member celebrating the occasion. Her quilting was exquisite and earned her praise and awards, being bestowed with the honor of a complimentary newspaper article, and riding with one of her quilts on a float in the Grove City Arts in the Alley parade. She and Marvin enjoyed many years of camping, traveling to Myrtle Beach and Florida, as well as many other states and making numerous trips "down home". They also enjoyed dining out with friends and babysitting their grandchildren. Thelma and Marvin raised three daughters who survive her, Valerie Todd, Kimberly Kyer, and Marla (Robert) Eal; grandchildren, Kelly (John) Timms, Adam (Jennifer) Todd and Aaron Todd, Nathan and Brendan Eal; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Lauren, Ethan and Evan Todd, Jacob and Emily Timms; sister-in-law, Beatrice Hollback; and many nephews and nieces. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2016 at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, S.W., 3393 Broadway, Grove City, OH 43123. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Grove City United Methodist Church, 2684 Columbus St., Grove City, OH 43123. Interment at South Webster Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Grove City United Methodist Quilters, 2650 Columbus St., Grove City, OH 43123 or the Grove City Food Pantry, 2710 Columbus St., Grove City, OH 43123. "You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl".
