Barclay Theodore H. "Ted" Barclay, 83, of Granville died Friday, January 31, 2014 at Kendal at Granville. He was born April 22, 1930 in Zanesville, Ohio to the late James and Esther (Young) Barclay. A 1947 graduate of Columbus North High School and a 1952 graduate of Ohio State University, Ted earned a Master of Education degree in 1962 from Kent State University. Ted served for 35 years as an Associate Professor of Physical Education, coach of several sports, and administrator at Denison University, retiring in 1997. "Coach Barclay" will be fondly remembered by generations of students as an inspirational educator, mentor, and friend. In 1997, he was inducted into Denison's Athletic Hall of Fame, and Barclay-Thomsen Field there was dedicated in his honor. Along with education, Ted's other long-term professional commitment was to the U.S. Navy. He served a year of active duty in 1949-50 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge, and he served his country for over 30 years in the Naval Reserve, retiring at the rank of Captain. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Patricia (Linzell) Barclay; sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Dorothy Barclay of North Andover, Massachusetts, Brian and Danielle Barclay of Granville, and Jeff and Beth Barclay of Sunderland, Vermont; and grandchildren, Jill, Todd, Caroline, Kendal, Taylor, Owen, Julia, and Livia. A memorial service celebrating Ted's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb.5, 2014 at Swasey Chapel, Denison University with Rev. Stephen J. Cramer as celebrant. The family will receive friends at Swasey Chapel from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. A private burial will be held at College Cemetery, Denison University with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
