William 1924 - 2018 Harman Obituary
Harman, William 1924 - 2018
William H. Harman, Jr., "Bill", 93, residing in Sandusky, died at the Ohio Veterans Home on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Bill was born on October 26, 1924 in Rittman, Ohio and attended school there. Bill joined the U.S Coast Guard in 1942 and shortly, thereafter, married the love of his life Ruby Elizabeth. Bill often spoke of the Normandy invasion. He was a radio operator on a U.S. Coast Guard LCI (landing craft for troops and supplies). Before the invasion, he was transferred to another LCI. A day later his previous ship was sunk by the Germans with no survivors. During the invasion, he was placed on the deck of his LCI to coordinate the various ships landing in Normandy. He always wondered why his life was spared during the battle with all the artillery bursts in the air and all the devastation he witnessed. After the war, Bill attended OSU and Bliss College and he and Ruby settled in the central Ohio area. Bill was a stock broker, salesman and owner of a postcard and souvenir business, which took him all over the state of Ohio. He was active in the community coaching baseball, basketball and football. He was a member of the Kiwanis, Lions Clubs and Knights of Columbus. He was always up for a good game of cards with friends and family. He enjoyed a challenging game of chess and helped start the Chess Club at Hayes High School in Delaware. One would often find him reading or watching old movies. Bill was a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, Reds and the Buckeyes. After his first loved passed away, Bill found love again and married Anna (Fathbruckner) Warden. He and Anna resided in Delaware, Ohio. Bill is survived by his sister, Lavura Brumfield of FL; sons, Dennis (Connie) and Gary Harman of Columbus; step-children, Miki (Gregg) Davenport, George (DeeDee) Warden, Cathy (Scott) Hemans, Jan (Keith) Hughes, all of Delaware and Dewey (Ann) Warden of Cincinnati; grandchild, Garey of Columbus; step-grandchildren, Liisa Warden of Arlington, VA, Kara and Rachel Warden of Cincinnati, Brenda (Mark) Himmel of Washington, PA, Sara (Bryan) Livingston and their daughter, Dewey, Sean and Samantha Hughes, all of Delaware, Tom Warden of Columbus and Chris (Sarah) Hemans of Lewis Center; nieces and nephews, Joyce Ann Jamison of North Jackson, OH, Paula Probst, Akron, OH and Kenny Skeens of CA. He is preceded in death by his parents William Harman Sr. and Thelma, sisters Pauline Skeens and Leona Rowe. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 3 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 82 E. William St., Delaware, OH. Burial will take place at a later date.
