Jim was my pottery mentor. His expertise was only exceeded by his sheer enthusiasm. I miss him as a friend and as an inspiration, always.

Thank you for your contributions to geology and archaeology. Especially appreciative of your analysis of the lithic debris from the DiGiondo Site in Heath, Ohio, which I excavated in the late 1970s. Rest in Peace, Jim Murphy.

I am so saddened to learn about the passing of James L. Murphy.
While I did not have the pleasure of meeting him in person, I corresponded with him in the 1990s. James helped me with surveying and completing the Ohio Historic Inventory Form for an early Ohio cemetery that I could not have done myself. He was amazing!
Thinking of him, and praying he is resting in eternal peace. He will never be forgotten.

I enjoyed discussing Ohio stoneware with Jim. I don't know anyone who knew more about it than he did. I was hoping Jim would finish a book on the subject. He will be missed here at Doc's Crocks!

I was in awe of his credentials and yet he dealt with me as if we were equals. He not only taught, he listened. We have lost a great man.

We are sad to learn of Jim's death. He was a lovely person with a lively wit and an abundance of good humor. His enthusiasm for and interest in archaeology was fun to see and to hear. We remember that he was an especially kind person. The very idea that he is no longer with us is hard to take. Our sympathy is with his family and friends.
Sincerely,
Ellen & Douglas Scherer

We want to express our deepest sympathies on the loss of your loved one and our long-time dear friend. He was an excellent archaeologist, author, explorer, and pottery historian, dedicated to his family, friends and craft. No obituary could do him justice, he made many contributions to his family, loved ones, friends and craft. He has gone to his reward. May he walk the woods of his youth. Much love until we see him again, Brian Donaldson and Carla Roberts

I've just learned of Jim's passing and I'm just heartbroken! What a brilliant man he was! Every time he spoke about pottery (his passion), it was an education on Ohio pottery. I only knew Jim the last 12 or so years and he was so helpful to me in learning about pottery. He was the friend that helped me find my biological family and for that I am eternally grateful for his help. He will be greatly missed by all his fellow colleagues and many friends in the antique world. My deepest sympathies to his family & loved ones. Kindest regards, Diayne McComis, London, Ohio

The world has lost a kind soul and a brilliant scholar. We have known him for 10+ years and there was no one with a wider knowledge of Ohio pottery than Jim. He was a true friend who will be sorely missed. Rest in peace.

Dear Jim, a sweet, humorous man with an amazing mind - sometimes fighting windmills - but always victorious and positive in spirit. It was good to know you.

I worked with Jim at the O.S.U. Library for a number of years and am so sorry to hear that he has passed. Jim was a wealth of knowledge about so many things. At one time I talked to him about my research and he gave me an extremely helpful lead to information that was part of a special local documents collection at the Columbus Metropolitan Library. I had not known that the collection of old documents, letters, newspaper clippings, etc. even existed until Jim told me about them. Another time a friend of mine had an old piece of pottery that she wanted to know more about and I asked Jim about it. He not only gave me information but also let me borrow a book that he had about that type of pottery. Jim and his wealth of knowledge will be greatly missed.

Jim was a wealth of knowledge, a tireless researcher, prolific writer, and an irreplaceable friend. The world was a far better place with him in it and now must drift along without him. A sad time for all who knew Jim. My sincerest condolences to all his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.
