Sally Hanna Hoffman Obituary
Hoffman Sally Hanna Hoffman, age 86, died peacefully at home with her family by her side on February 16, 2014. She was born in Columbus, Ohio on April 19, 1927, the daughter of Margaret Sherman and Walter Scott Hanna. Along with her parents, Sally was preceded in death by her beloved husband Frederick Herbert Hoffman and her brother Jay S. Hanna. Sally graduated from the Columbus School for Girls (1945), Bennett Junior College (1947), and The Ohio State University (1988) where she earned her degree in Landscape Horticulture. Sally loved to garden. Her gardens were legendary for their creativity, unique designs and specimen plants - and how they all grew so very green. She was a trained horticulturalist and an avid conservationist. She received the Horticultural Award from the Garden Club of America, was a member of the Little Garden Club of Columbus, the Mary Ritter Garden Club, a board member of Scenic Ohio and the Conservation Committee of the Columbus Foundation. She was part of the community group that initiated the first tree-planting project along Main Street in Bexley, Ohio. Her passion even blossomed into a landscape design business, called Green Meadows. Sally was also an advocate for the aging and the elderly. She volunteered for the Ohio Council on Aging, was a board member for the Home of the Aged, charter member of Senior Citizen Recreation Centers, and grant initiator for the Group Council on Aging. Sally was named the winner of the CSG Alumna Award in 2006. In addition to all of her achievements, Sally loved to travel, was an avid reader, an excellent cook and kept up with current events and issues. She loved staying in touch with her six children and 15 grandchildren (often through Skype and Facebook). Her faithful canine friend Winston was always at her side. Sally is survived by her loving children, Betsy (Bernie) Schaknowski, Herbert (Jenny) Hoffman, Anne (Bill) Porter, Susan (Josh) Cook, Sally (Mark) Derrick, and Jane Hoffman; her grandchildren, B.J., Brad (Lindsey), and Stephanie Schaknowski, Whitney and Frederick Hoffman, Molly, Will and Herb Porter, Hanna, Max and Joie Cook, and John, Betsy, Tom, and Sara Derrick; and great grandchildren, Morgan, Paige and Ryan Schaknowski. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio with Rev. Amy Miracle officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Narthex. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kobacker House, c/o OhioHealth Foundation, 180 E.
