Smith Michael L. Smith, 52, of Gahanna, Ohio, passed away on March 27, 2014 at the Cleveland Clinic. Born on June 17, 1961 in Dayton, Ohio, Mike later moved to Columbus where he resided until his death. In 1990, Mike began his Real Estate career in the new home sales industry. Employed by The Homewood Corporation, M/I Homes and Dominion, Mike mentored numerous colleagues and won countless top sales awards along the way, including the BIA Rookie of the Year in 1991 and the 2005 Keller Williams Rookie of the Year. Many have attributed their success in the industry to Mike's extensive knowledge, guidance and encouragement. In 2006, Mike co-founded Obvious Choice Realty with his business partner and friend, Darin Watkins. After growing the company from the ground up, creating a family of over 40 agents, the company merged with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate in 2011. Mike's true passion was remodeling homes. He enjoyed transforming distressed properties and turning them into something beautiful, creating homes for people that often did not have the vision that drove Mike to conceive what he knew was possible. Always full of life, energy and humor, Mike radiated confidence (though some joked a little too much at times), but his passion for life, his work and his family was never in doubt. He enjoyed golfing, Texas Hold 'em and watching sports. Mike was preceded in death by his parents Sampson Smith and Barbara Talmage, brother Mark Smith, uncle and mentor Denver Smith. He is survived by his loving wife, Nikki Smith and their four beautiful daughters, Madison, Mackenize, Mallory and Megan; his first wife, Candice (Alan) Webber, and their wonderful children, Michael (Mandy) Smith, Amy Smith; grandchildren, Torrance, Allison and Cooper; aunt, Nancy Smith; special cousin, Russ (Nicole) Smith; sisters, Melissa Smith and Michelle Aldrich; Mike is also survived by many other special friends, co-workers and extended family. Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Calling hours will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 3 at EVANS FUNERAL HOME, 4171 E. Livingston Ave., where the funeral service will be held 11 a.m, Friday, April 4. A private family interment will be held in Dayton, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Mike's passion for and pride in his daughters' education may contribute to The Columbus Academy, 4300 Cherry Bottom Rd., Gahanna Oh 43230.
