Dr. John Durant Toft II Obituary
Toft Dr. John Durant Toft II, 79, of Upper Arlington, died May 7, 2014 in Columbus, OH. He was born July 1, 1934 in Portland, Maine. He received a Bachelors degree and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from The Ohio State University, and a Masters of Science from Wake Forest University, where his career in veterinary pathology began. He served in the United States Coast Guard and in the United States Air Force, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following his years in the service, he worked for Battelle Memorial Institute and for The Train Station. He is preceded in death by his parents LCDR Charles E. Toft and Nancy Stearns, his wife of 45 years Alice McNamee Toft and his sister Helen. He is survived by children, Charles E. Toft II (Jill) of Upper Arlington, Margaret (Timothy) Lagucki of Upper Arlington, Jennifer (Richard) Vah of Columbus, Susan (William) Lush of Columbus, and Peter J. Toft of Columbus; brothers, Fred Toft and Paul (LoRece) Toft; grandchildren, John and Joseph Lagucki, Emily Kerr, Sarah and Eric Vah, and Brian and Brendan Lush; a large extended family including numerous nieces and nephews; and his canine companion, Albert. He was a supporter of many charities, and an avid backer of the Cleveland Indians and the Buckeyes. He was a longtime member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Upper Arlington, and will be missed by his fellow parishioners, his colleagues at Battelle, and his friends in the Central Ohio model railroading community. A public visitation will be held at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Upper Arlington, between the hours of 6-8 p.m. on Monday, May 12. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1899 McCoy Road, Upper Arlington. Entombment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 N. High St., Lewis Center, immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Capital Area Humane Society in John's memory.
