May Hazel R. May, 97, of Columbus, died on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Zusman Hospice in Columbus. Born on February 23, 1917 to the late Chester and Myrtle Rahn, Hazel was a 1934 graduate of Simon Gratz High School in Boyertown, PA. Early in life she enjoyed bowling, painting, and playing piano. Hazel was a member of the Grace United Church of Christ, where she taught Kindergarten Sunday School to many kids including some of her own grandchildren. She was also involved in the Marion Franklin Senior Center, enjoying line dancing "to cheer up the old people" until she was 96. She also enjoyed working the electoral polls and frequently enjoyed attending the monthly luncheon at Fellowship Baptist Church. Above all, she cherished her time with her family. Hazel is survived by her daughters, Liane Smith and Bonnie Notestine; grandchildren, Lisa (Edward) Schmidt, David (Julia) Smith, Linda (Koen) Hartman, Daniel Smith, John (Jennifer) Notestine, Douglas (Geri) Smith, Laura Keohane, and Christa Notestine; great-grandchildren, Christopher Smith, Kirsten Hartman, Adam Notestine, Andreas Hartman, Christina Keohane, Allison Notestine, Gavin Smith, Abigail Smith, Victoria Schmidt, Josiah Notestine, Jayden Notestine, and Jaxon Notestine; and her nieces, Linda (Allen) Steffy and Beverly (Roger) Strunk. Hazel was preceded in death by her husbands Stewart Frey, Arthur Kasper, and Carl May and her sister Jeanne Wolmer. Friends may visit from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 550 Hill Road North, Pickerington, OH 43147, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Interment at Glen Rest Memorial Estate. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Wexner Heritage House and Zusman Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Hazel.
