Pfeil Jack A. Pfeil, 85, of West Jefferson, died Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Mt. Carmel West Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 4, 1929 in West Jefferson, a son of William C. and Sara (Meeker) Pfeil. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany during the Korean Conflict as communication chief in charge of radio communications. He was a member of the American Legion Post 201 and VFW Post 7005. Jack retired from Ohio Bell in 1982 after almost 35 years as engineering manager. Jack owned and operated Pfeil Communications after retirement. Over the years he also served West Jefferson as he zoning and building inspector, an assistant to Mayor Charles Miller and as street commissioner. Jack was involved with the West Jefferson Community Association since the 1960s, serving as president in 1967 and 2006, assisting in the initiation of the annual senior citizens Christmas Party, treasurer, and trustee and was the first Ox Roast administrator. He served on the Jefferson Local School Board of Education for 16 years and was a member of the stadium committee to raise funds to erect the football stadium at Dr. J. C. Kile Field. He served as the West Jefferson Alumni Association president for 2 years. For many years Jack supplied the public address system and communication equipment for the football games and also provided public address equipment for the Ox Roast and parade, Memorial Day services and many other events in West Jefferson and the surrounding area. Jack was honored as the West Jefferson Football Fan of the Year in 1984, West Jefferson Alumni Citizenship Award in 1985, Ox Roast Grand Marshall in 1993, elected to the West Jefferson High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997 and awarded the Ralph L. Parsons Sr. Community Service Award in 2010. He is survived by sons, Jeff (Cathy Shoults) and Greg (Sherry Swoyer), both of West Jefferson; sisters-in-law, Jo Pfeil, Lavonne Parkhill of Coshocton, Kathy Norman of Millfield; brothers-in-law, Don Coonfare of West Jefferson and Ken Schlarb of Coshocton; many nieces and nephews; and his dogs, Molly and Mia. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary in 2003, sisters Marge Butin, Laura Tinkler and Wilma Coonfare, brothers Weldon, Kenny, Roger and Dick, sisters-in-law Jane Pfeil, Jean Pfeli, Janet Pfeil, Karma Schlarb and brothers-in-law Russell Butin, Jim Tinkler and Don Norman. Friends may call Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at RADER-McDONALD FUNERAL HOME, 1355 West Main St., West Jefferson, where funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Patricia Oesterle officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
