ROTHERMEL William S. Rothermel, MD, 92, passed away February 8, 2011, at his son and daughter-in-law's where he had been at home for the past 20 months. Born September 8, 1918, in Ashland, PA, the son of William S. Rothermel Sr. and Anna Marie Buck Rothermel. Graduated from Colgate Univ. in 1941 where he was a member of Sigma Chi. At Jefferson Medical College he was inducted into the US Military Service as were all medical students at that time. Dr. Rothermel married (nurse) Esther Greenly of Lincoln, DE, September 23, 1944, the day after his graduation from Jefferson Medical College. He completed internship in Harrisburg, PA., and was discharged from the service in 1946 with the rank of Captain. After residency in radiology at Episcopal Hospital, PA., he worked at Aultman Hospital from 1949-1951. In 1951 he moved his family to Johnstown, PA. to become Chief of Radiology at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital. They returned to Canton where he worked at Aultman Hosp from 1953-1982. He was Associate Director of the Radiology Dept. and was installed as President of the medical staff in 1973. In 1977 the American College of Radiology conferred the degree of Fellow on him. He was a member of the North American Radiological Society and the American Legion Post #0888. He was a long-time member and volunteer at First Christian Church, North Canton, and then a member at Christian Fellowship Church in Columbus. He is survived by his two children, daughter, Susan Marino of Rochester, MN; and son, William S. Rothermel Jr. MD and daughter-in-law Kim G. Rothermel, MD of Columbus; his six grandsons, John (Sara) and Kenton (Kendra) Marion; Peter (Sarah), Aaron, Luke, and Adam Rothermel, and his five great grandsons, Angelo Marino, Isaac Marino, and Adin, Noah and Liam Rothermel; sister-in-law Wanda Greenly; many nieces and nephews. Dr. Rothermel was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, 5970 Godown Rd, Columbus, 43235; AND on Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church, 6900 Market Ave. N., Canton, OH 44721. In lieu of flowers donations to either church would be appreciated.
