McKINNEY Roberta June Manges McKinney, age 84, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, April 4, 2011 at Sunrise Assisted Living of Gahanna, OH where she had lived for the past five years. Roberta was born June 27, 1926 to Byron and Mary (nee Lehman) Manges in Hancock County, OH. Growing up on the family farm, Roberta was involved in 4-H and traveled to Chicago, IL to represent Ohio in a national 4-H event. She was a lifelong lover of music and received her Bachelor's Degree from Bluffton College in Music and Education. She taught music in grades 1-12 both band and choir, and directed musicals. It was in school where she met her husband, Donovan Ewing McKinney, they were married on June 4, 1950 and were blessed with children and a loving marriage, Donovan E. preceded her death on April 3, 2007. Donovan and Roberta lived most of their lives in Columbus, Ohio; Donovan as Assistant to the Superintendent of Southwestern City Schools, and Roberta caring for their home and children. She was proficient in piano, voice, and cello, and played in the Jewish Center orchestra in Bexley. She instilled a positive outlook on life and shared her skills of cooking and clothes making. Her love of music has been passed down to many generations and will remain an essential memory of Roberta, along with her sense of humor, the love of her family and family gatherings, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and a special fondness for sweets! Roberta is survived by her children, Joyce Lyday, Rome, GA, Jean (Chris) Jones, Columbus, OH, Janice (Greg) Adams, Springfield, OH and Donovan Robert (Joan) McKinney, Columbus, OH. Also surviving to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Jonathan (Linda) Lyday, Beth (Jess) Hinshaw, James Lyday, Bobby Jones, Tommy Jones, Theodore Adams, Jane Adams, Molly McKinney and Ellie McKinney; and great-grand-daughter, Emily Mae Lyday. Roberta was very recently predeceased by her eldest sister Myda Jane Badertscher, Bluffton, OH, and is survived by her younger sister, Marilyn (Ron) Heldman, Bluffton, OH; her younger brother, Dean (Sue) Manges, Ottawa, OH; and sister-in-law, Pat McKinney, Cridersville, OH; as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. All are grateful that Roberta and Donovan are finally reunited. Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2011 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL HOME, 239 S. Main Street, Bluffton, OH 45817. Rev. Kevin Mohr will officiate. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada, OH.
