Eugene Shade Obituary

SHADE Eugene "Gene" Shade, age 85, passed away at home on April 3, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. Gene was born on October 20, 1926, to the late Jacob and Theresa Shade. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Albert (Helen), Herbert (Edna Mae) and Robert Shade, his sisters Helen (Paul) Bartsch, and Mary Jean (Robert) Phelps, and his nephew Jerry Shade. Gene was born in Columbus, Ohio, and graduated from West High School in 1944. After serving in the US Navy at the end of World War II, Gene attended Capital University in Bexley, Ohio, where he met and married his life-long love Judy Ferguson on December 26, 1948. Gene graduated from Capital University in 1950 with a BS in Education and taught school for four years before beginning a career in insurance by working at the Tice Insurance Agency which led to the creation of the Shade Insurance Agency. A sports lover, Gene coached his son in baseball from little league to high school. He was also the defensive back coach for the Capital Crusader's football team from 1961-1973 and was especially proud of the Capital championship team that won the Alonso Stagg bowl in 1970. Gene was a 3 sport athlete at Capital and is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame. He was the #1 fan of the Gahanna Lincoln Lion's baseball team coached by his son Mike. Gene will be remembered by those who were blessed to know him as a devoted and supportive husband, father, grandfather, and friend who lived his life with an understanding and loving heart and abundant faith. Although he will be missed, we rejoice that he is reunited with those who preceded him in Life Everlasting. Gene is survived by his wife of 63 years, Julia (Judy) Anne Shade; his children, Stephanie Shilling, Theresa (Joe) Kenneth, and Michael (Cathi) Shade; his grand-children, Jennifer Shilling, Msgt. Christopher (Stacey) Shilling, Jeremy Shilling, Julie (John Fout) Shilling, Timothy (Gabrielle) Shade and Emily Shade; his great-grand-son, Brandon Fout; as well as many nieces, nephews and life-long friends. Friends may call Friday at WOODYARD EAST CHAPEL, 2300 E. Livingston Ave., from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Saturday at Gender Road Christian Church, 5336 Gender Road, Canal Winchester from 10-11 a.m., where service will be held at 11 a.m. Pastor John Romig and Pastor Kay McGlinchey officiating. Family suggests donations in Gene's memory be made to Vitas Hospice or Capital University Varsity Alumni Association.

I arrived on the Capital campus one year after Gene after also serving in the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII. In my very first class--Hilmar Grimm's American History course--I sat down in the front row next to the very pretty Judy Ferguson and we maintained that seating arrangement for the remainder of the year. Judy, I'm sorry for your loss. I met my wife, Mickee, at Capital, and we have now been married nearly 59 years. We both hope that we can continue that relationship at least as long as yours with Gene. Dick Boyd
