Carol Marty Obituary

MARTY Carol Anne (Bode) Marty, 84, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, began her new life on Thursday, April 26, 2012. She was born in Jamaica, Long Island, in New York City, on December 17, 1927, the youngest child of Rev. Dietrich and Clara Bode. In her childhood she also lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and New Knoxville, Ohio, where she graduated from high school. Following her graduation from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, she married John L. Marty on July 15, 1950, and after living briefly in Cleveland, Ohio, they moved to Columbus, then to Reynoldsburg. He preceded her in death on April 17, 2008. A professional singer, pianist and voice instructor, Carol received her Master's Degree from the Ohio State University and then taught for many years at Otterbein College and Capital University, while also maintaining her own private voice studio. She also directed numerous area choirs, including the AAUW chorus, Saturday Music Club, and the Women's Music Club choirs, as well the choirs at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church, and Reynoldsburg United Methodist Church where she was a member. Always interested in her community, she volunteered many hours in many different capacities, including at the Life Center at Reynoldsburg UMC where she led music every Wednesday morning for 28 years. She is survived by a brother, Arden Bode of Whittier, California; three children, Kathleen (Tim) of Washougal, Washington, David (Mary) of Rockville, Indiana, and Daniel (Vicki) of Valley City, Ohio; four grandchildren and 7 AFS exchange students whom she considered her grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and three sisters. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, at Reynoldsburg United Methodist Church, 1636 Graham Road in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. There will be a private graveside service for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family invites friends and loved ones to make a contribution to the Life Center at Reynoldsburg United Methodist Church. Carol and I are both Heidelberg graduates. We met through the Columbus Heidelberg Alumni Association while we lived in Columbus. I believe I was her first voice student in the mid sixties. We had a wonderful friendship with the bond of music and reading. She helped make music for so many people, and I feel blessed to have known her. Please accept my sympathy!

When I was in H.S. back in the 70's - Your Mom was our choir director at Reynoldsburg UMC. I loved being in choir and having her as our Director.
What a beautiful lady in spirit and heart.

To the family,
Your mother was a special lady. She encouraged me as a new member of the Columbus, Ohio music community in the early 80's. I shall not forget her kindness.

Dear Kathy, David, Dan, and all your children,

As you know, Carol and I had a very special relationship beginning in 1963 when I first joined The Saturday Music Club. As an accompanist, I will forever be grateful to her for choosing music that constantly challenged me. On behalf of myself, my family, and The Saturday Music Club, I send my condolences on your loss, and I wish for you many happy moments in the future as you recall the wonderful memories you have had with Carol. I have the CDs I made of the best of her faculty recitals, and sometimes I just sit in my office and play them on the computer to remind me of all the good times we had together over the years. She was indeed a gem that left sparkles wherever she went.
