Rose G. Mandelkorn

MANDELKORN Mrs. Rose G. Mandelkorn was born on January 1, 1915 in Passaic, NJ and died on September 20, 2012 in Ft. Myers, Fl. She was preceded in death by her husband Ben, who served as the Executive Director of the Columbus Jewish Federation and Jewish Foundation for 40 years. She is survived by her daughter, Judy (Bud) Levin of Los Angeles; son, Dr. Robert (Mary Beth) Mandelkorn of Ft. Myers, FL; grandson, Max Levin of Israel; and granddaughter, Rachel Sophia of Ft. Myers, FL. She received her RN degree from the Nathan and Miriam Barnard Memorial Hospital in Paterson, N.J. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree from Capital University and her Masters of Social Work Degree from Ohio State University. She worked for 20 years at Children's Hospital and established the first Well Baby Clinic in America. Through her landmark research on early growth in children, she documented widespread hunger in America. This led to the Federal government instituting one nutritious hot meal a day in the Head Start program. She was a member of Tifereth Israel Congregation. Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 23 at THE EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3232 E. Main St. with Rabbi Harold Berman officiating. Burial will follow at New Tifereth Israel Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at The Columbus Jewish Foundation, 1175 College Ave. immediately following the service until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Columbus Jewish Federation, The Columbus Jewish Foundation or The Columbus Jewish Historical Society.
