SHUGERT Pastor David L. Shugert, age 73, of Lewis Center, OH, died Tuesday, November 20, 2012, after a brave journey with cancer. Born April 12, 1939, Dave grew up in Clintonville, OH, and graduated from the former North High School. He then joined the American Lutheran Church's Foreign Mission Builder Team in Papua New Guinea where, from 1958-60, he served as a carpenter and youth and scout leader. After his return to the U.S., he graduated from Capital University and earned his Master of Divinity (1968) and Doctor of Ministry (1977) degrees (Dissertation: Cult Studies and Alternative Religious Movements) at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, in Columbus, OH. Prior to his retirement in 2004, he served congregations in Plevna (Intern), Richey and Lambert, MT, Moulton, OH, and Pickerington, OH, where he was pastor for nearly 27 years. Service to church and community was always a priority. He was a Life Scout, Sunday School teacher, and Ohio District Luther League President. He spearheaded creation of a Homesteaders' Historical Museum and of a Youth Center in Richey, MT. He also served as liaison between area Lutheran churches and Native American reservations in eastern Montana. Dave was president of the Sertoma Club of Wapakoneta, OH, chaplain at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home in Spencerville, OH, a board member of Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio and of United Way of Fairfield County, OH. A member of the Transition Team for the 3 synods of Ohio in the formation of the current ELCA, he also was president of the Pickerington Ministerial Association, an anti-cult resource for Ohio families of persons entering or leaving cults, and a teacher and mentor for 35 first and second-year seminary students and 5 interns at Epiphany. In retirement, he was chair of his subdivision homeowners' association and a consultant for area churches in conflict or seeking direction for growth and outreach visioning. In addition to his parents, Max and Mildred (Armbruster), he was preceded in death by his nephew Ron Shugert. Dave is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jean (Schleicher); sons, Mike, Westerville and Matt and daughter-in-law, Joy Fishel, Silver Spring, MD; grandchildren, Tessa and Ronan; older brother, Dick (Peg) Shugert; brothers-in-law, John (Phylis) and Jim (Livvy) Schleicher; nieces and nephews, cousins and host of friends, all of whom he loved dearly. Friends may visit the Shugert family 2:30-4:30 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 268 Hill Road North, Pickerington, OH, 43147, where a memorial service will be held, 11 a.m. Monday. Pastors Tim Kuenzli, Will Hartfelder, Dick Walston and Bishop John Schleicher officiating. Inurnment at Epiphany's Memorial Garden will follow the service.
