We think of Charles and Mary often, always with fondness, gratitude, and respect, remembering the last time we saw them, at our home for dinner. We can´t believe that it´s been so long since then and since we lost him. Our love to Mary.

I'll remember Dr. Babcock for his dignity, his gentle humor, and his genuine interest in students. In the first class I took from him, he met with each of us individually, to get to know us better. I recall being impressed that the department chairman would take the time to talk to undergraduates. My condolences to Dr. Babcock's family.

Charles taught me Caesar and Tacitus. We read the Medea together. He spoke at Watterson at a ceremony honoring the students' accomplishments on the National Latin Exam. He wrote letters of recommendation which pretty much assured me of a spot at the Centro in Rome. He attended my 50th birthday party with his lovely Mary. His posters and postcards of Rome have decorated my classroom many times. He has given me books that I will always regard fondly. He awed me, he advised me, he taught me to love the Classics.
Ave atque vale, Care Magister!

Livy and I (and our 2 and 4 year-olds) spent wonderful weekends with Charles and the Berias, when we were at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome in 1974. We would crowd 5 adults and 2 children into a small Fiat for excursions to neighboring towns. Charles missed not having his family with him and we filled some of the void. Charles was also an inspired teacher, who brought the Classics and Roman archaeology to life for all of us. A true humanist who will be missed by all of us. Our condolences to his family.

I'm so sorry to learn about this great loss. Charles was a lovely man and a wonderful, dedicated professor--a real role model to me. I studied in Rome under his direction, and it was a life-changing experience, due in large part to his leadership. Please accept my condolences.

To the family of Dr. Babcock,

I was a student of his at OSU from 1989-92 and thoroughly enjoyed having him as a professor. I will always be grateful to him for agreeing to be my professor for an independent study course for a quarter during my junior year, and for guiding me through my senior thesis. Even though he was never officially my faculty advisor, he was the one from whom I always sought advice; he was always so willing to give it, and he was very generous with his time. The one on one time with him was certainly the highlight of my years at OSU. Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss.

Jan and I are saddened to hear that we have lost a dear, truly good, honest friend. Since I studied under Charles at Ohio State in the late '60s, he and Mary have been frequent correspondents, sharing news of family, friends, and travels. I was able to see Charles but two or three times in all these years, but he was always the same gently wry but patient adviser whom I came to admire during those years on the Oval. We will remember him and Mary always. Our condolences are inadequate but heartfelt nevertheless.
