Leopold Liss M.D. Obituary
LISS Leopold Liss, M.D., age 89 of Upper Arlington, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at his home. He was born November 19, 1923 in Lwow, Poland, the son of the late Michael and Maria (Zychon) Liss. He is survived by his wife, Henryka Liss; sons (and daughter-in-law) Richard W. (and Carla) Liss, M.D. and Robert B. Liss, J.D., all of Columbus; grandchildren, Jessica (and Alex) River-Bethel, Elizabeth, Joseph, Michael, and Andrew Liss; and great-granddaughter, Sophia River-Bethel, all of Columbus. Dr. Liss received his Baccalaureate in Humanities in Lwow, Poland, 1941; and his Doctorate of Medicine from Rupert-Carol University, Heidelberg, Germany, 1950. Co-founder of both the National Association of the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association as well as the Columbus Alzheimer's Association, he was also on the State of Ohio Governor's Task Force on Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Liss was the Medical Director of the Columbus Alzheimer Care Center for the past 21 years. He was Professor Emeritus of The Ohio State University Department of Pathology and served as a professor in the Departments of Pathology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of the Graduate School. Dr. Liss also served as the Former Director of the Division of Neuropathology, Director of the OSU Cognitive Disorders Clinic, and Co-Director of the Office of Gerontology at OSU. He was a member of the medical staff at The Ohio State University, Columbus Children's Hospital as well as other hospitals. He also served as Vice-President of the American Association of Neuropathologists. Dr. Liss authored or co-authored over 250 papers and abstracts as well as authoring chapters in medical texts about aging and dementia along with organizing symposia on Alzheimer's disease. His passion and dedication were honored with numerous awards including the Genesis Award from the National Alzheimer Association; Educator of the Year from the Ohio Network of Educational Consultants; Distinguished Research Leadership Award from the Ohio Research Council on Aging; and Humanitarian Award from the Alzheimer Disease Association, Miami Valley Chapter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Liss and sent to the Alzheimer's Disease Strategic Initiatives Research Fund (gifts@osu.edu).
