SHANAHAN Dr. Patrick Shanahan, PhD, 81, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 24, 2013 at his home in Columbus, Ohio. A graduate of Notre Dame (BA) and Indiana University (PhD), Patrick was a mathematician who taught for 37 years at The College of The Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and continued on as Professor Emeritus. He studied mathematics at Harvard and Oxford Universities, and was an honorary fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge University. He continued to follow discoveries in the world of mathematics in his retirement. He was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the London Mathematical Society. He had a lifelong insatiable appetite for learning, studying art and painting, the banjo and the piano, French, and Arabic starting at age 70. Most of all, he enjoyed the company of his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Vee. He is preceded in death by his parents Dr. Eugene Shanahan and Marie Bintz Shanahan and his brother J. Christopher Shanahan. He is survived by loving wife, Vee Ruth (Nelson); and by children, Michael, Matthew (Suzanne), Mary (Jeffrey) Magner, Patrick (Karol), David (Jeanne), Catherine (Kermit) Whitfield, Jack (Laura), James, and Peter (Jennifer); his brother, Michael (Connie) Shanahan; 15 grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at DEYO-DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, 1578 West First Avenue, Grandview Heights, Ohio 43212 on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 1 p.m. Friends may, if they wish, contribute to Wounded Warriors or The United Way in lieu of flowers.
