Carbiener Dr. Wayne Carbiener, a native of Lakeville, Indiana who retired to Hilton Head Island from Columbus, Ohio in 1994, has passed away. He was 76. Carbiener earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1958 and an M.S. in nuclear engineering in 1962 from Purdue University. He also received a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from The Ohio State University in 1975. He is the founder of the Hilton Head Island chapter of the Purdue Alumni Association. Before attending graduate school, Carbiener served in the United States Navy as an officer on a destroyer. Prior to moving to Hilton Head Island, Carbiener spent a 30-year career with Battelle Memorial Institute, a not-for-profit research company serving both government and private industry. Carbiener served on the Beaufort County School Board from District Three from 2009-2012. He donated his annual board salary to the Foundation for Educational Excellence, a Beaufort County School District program which awards grants to innovative teachers in the system. He also served on the Board of Directors of CSA, the property owners association for Sea Pines Plantation from 2002 to 2008, the last four as president. He was a member of St. Andrew-by-the-Sea Methodist Church. Carbiener is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jacque; four children, Wayne, Jr., Jody, Jill and Mike; his brother, Dean; and seven grandchildren. The family plans a small, private memorial service and interment at a later date at the family cemetery in Bremen, Indiana where five generations of Carbieners are buried.
