Paul Clair Shields Obituary
Shields Paul Clair Shields, age 87 of Columbus, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Paul was born in Waverly, Indiana and grew up in Monrovia, Indiana, son of the late Clair and Ruth Shields. Also preceded in death by his brother, George "Bud" Shields and sister, Martha Gannon. Following high school, Paul went on to attend Indiana University where he was captain of their basketball team as a freshman. He later went into the U.S. Army where he served during WWII, participating in liberating the Nordstrom Prison Camp as well as earning a European Military Basketball championship. Upon his arrival home, Paul graduated from the University of Nebraska where he studied engineering, played basketball and met his future wife of 66 years, Viola Germer. Paul retired from Rockwell Intl. after 38 years as an aeronautical engineer and then went on to work from 1990-2006 with Snow Aviation. Paul was a very kind, thoughtful and intelligent man who was liked by everyone. He was a natural leader who many look towards for guidance. He was a sports enthusiast, especially golf and basketball, avid reader and all around great family man. He had a strong faith in God and was a longtime member of River Church in a Barn where he also served for 12 years as their financial officer. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Viola Shields; children, Paul David (Adria) Shields, Diane (Joel Cohen) Shields, Rand (Monica) Shields, Terry (Christina) Shields, Gregg (Sherre) Shields, Debra (Bob) Swanger, Richard (Kim) Shields, and Sharon (Chris) Davis; 20 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; siblings, Jane Williams, Bill (Jackie) Shields and Larry (Melanie) Shields; and many other extended family and dear friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013 at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High St., where family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday. Dr. Bob Swanger and Mr. Terry Shields, officiating. Interment Kingwood Memorial Estate. Memorial contributions may be made to the River Church in a Barn, 2419 Rt. 42 N., Delaware, Ohio 43015.
