Foland Ellen Foland, age 68, passed away on April 30, 2013. Preceded in death by parents Leonard and Charlotte Spero. Survived by her loving husband, Kenneth Foland; sisters, Deborah Spero, Abby (Jeffrey Kayden) Spero, Sally (Matthew Putziger) Spero; many nieces, nephews and their families, and two wonderful dogs, Dulci and Fala. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Maryland, Ellen married her high school sweetheart, Ken. She earned a Master of Social Work degree from Temple University and a PhD with a specialization in gerontology from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. The Folands moved to Columbus in 1980 when Ken joined the faculty of Ohio State University. Upon finishing graduate work, Ellen joined the faculty of Ohio Dominican College as an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work. After her retirement, Ellen spent many years volunteering with social welfare organizations, and at the OSU Medical Center. She was also very active with the Medical Center Service Board. Many will remember Ellen as an avid reader, who loved talking about books and was a constant source of book recommendations to all. In recent years, the Folands have split their time between Columbus and their home on the island of Curacao. Graveside service will be held at 12Noon on May 2 at GREEN LAWN CEMETERY - BETH TIKVAH SECTION, 1000 Greenlawn Ave. with Rabbi Richard Kellner officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to James Cancer Hospital, Kobacker House, OSU Medical Center Service Board, or charitable organizations of choice.
