Converse James "Jim" T. Converse, age 89, of Plain City, passed away peacefully with his children by his side at Memorial Hospital of Union County Tuesday afternoon, August 20, 2013. Born March 5, 1924 in Columbus, Ohio. He was the son of Harold Smith Converse and Marcella Thayer Jackson. Preceded in death by his parents loving wife of 66 years Guyla June (Gaa) Converse, January 24, 2013. Survived by brother, Bob Converse; sister, Sue (Tom) Wilson of Plain City; loving children, Tim Converse of West Jefferson, Michele (Ivan) Troyer of Plain City and Denise Scott of Plain City; his eight grandchildren, Vince Converse, Dan Converse, Erin Converse, Julie Miller, Amy Detweiler, Mackenzie Whitaker, Abbey Martini, Matt Scott and 15 great-grandchildren were the loves of his life. They will remember him by his quick wit, ability to make them laugh and involvement in their lives. Jim served as a 2nd Lieutenant pilot in the US Air Force during WWII. He farmed and ran a printing business before finding his niche as a botanical artist for OM Scotts & Sons. He wrote, illustrated and photographed technical information about turf problems for Scotts training manuals and seminars. Once retired, his artistic talents evolved into bird carving. His life-like carvings led him to win first in the professional category at the Ward World Championship carving show. Jim was proud to be a lifelong resident of Plain City. He designed the original Seal of Plain City featuring the town clock. Through the years he donated carvings as fund raisers for Shekinah Christian School, Plain City Lions Club and the New Albany Classic. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 202 E. Main Street, (St. Rte. 161W), Plain City.
