Bender John Edward Bender, 71, of Canal Winchester passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 14, 2013. He was born September 7, 1942 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Ralph and Harriett Bender. John was a proud graduate with his bachelors, masters and PhD from The Ohio State University. After graduation, he and his wife spent 3 years teaching on Yap Island in the Pacific Ocean. He worked as an educator and coach his entire career, always expecting and developing the best character from his athletes and students. He and his family spent more than 20 years in Richmond, Indiana where he was an administrator for the Richmond schools. He taught college courses at Indiana University East, was a basketball referee, and president of the Richmond Swim Club. They moved back to Canal Winchester where John continued to teach and coach. He taught 6th grade at Whitehall Schools, Freshman Advisor at Ohio State, Canal Winchester Boys Track as well as Girls and Boys Cross Country Coach, for more than 20 years; earning several coach of the year awards. He was inducted into the Canal Winchester Schools Athletic Hall of Fame for his dedication as an athlete and coach; and he served as the Hall of Fame President. He worked for 20 years as the School-Court liaison for the Franklin County Educational Services; he also served as the Ashland University Student Teacher Advisor. He was a dedicated member of Faith United Methodist Church, teaching adult Sunday School. He served on the Canal Winchester City Council for 17 years, chairing many committees. Additionally, John was a member of the Canal Winchester Lions Club. He is survived by his loving wife Joan whom he married August 29, 1964; his children, Linda (Matt) Striebel of Zionsville, IN, Melissa (Brian) Hayes of Carmel, IN, Judy (Tom) Warner of Lebanon, IN, Dr. David (Amanda) Bender of Fishers, IN; cherished grandchildren, Jake, Madison, Hunter, Josh, Dean, Mason, Rebekah and Makenzie; beloved sister, Susie (Rodger) Rhinehart of Canal Winchester; niece, Becky; and nephews, Andy and Scott. The family is being served by the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 650 W. Waterloo St. Canal Winchester, where Visitation will be held Friday, September 20, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral service will be Saturday, at 10 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 15 W. Columbus St. Canal Winchester, with Pastor Wayne Stuntz officiating. Interment will follow at Franklin Hill Memorial Gardens.
