Kaldor Phyllis Jean Kaldor, age 59, died of cancer at her home in Columbus surrounded by family and friends on October 6, 2013. She was born on October 8, 1953 in Bellaire, OH to the late Joseph and Irene (Ratka) Kaldor. After graduating from Bellaire High School, she moved to Columbus, graduated from The Ohio State University in 1976 with a BS in nursing and began working as a nurse at University Hospital. She received her MS in nursing in 1990 from OSU and was the first nurse manager of the hospital's bone marrow transplant unit. She helped open the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and at her death was director of inpatient nursing at the James. At the hospital, Phyllis was loved by patients, co-workers, and, above all, her fellow nurses. During her career she received the James Champion Award, OSU College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award, Columbus Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society Cornerstone Award, and the Oncology Nursing Society Yarbro Mentorship Award. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity, the Oncology Nursing Society, founder and past president of the Columbus Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society, Liberty Presbyterian Church, and an honorary member and I-dotter of TBDBITL. She volunteered with Dublin Girl Scouts, Dublin Taiko Boosters, as a 100-mile rider in Pelotonia, ACS Pan-Ohio Hope Ride, Habitat for Humanity, Street Church, and organized tailgate parties for every Buckeye game. She was a true Buckeye fan, missing only 3 home football games since 1974. She is survived by her partner of 24 years and husband, Donn Young; daughter, Rachel Kaldor; stepdaughter, Amanda Young; sisters, Josephine "Bunny" Kaldor and Rosemarie "Re" Nemeth; brother, Michael Kaldor; niece, Sarah Nemeth; nephews, Joseph Nemeth and Chad (Kristen) Kaldor; mother-in-law, Dorothy Young; special friends, Joan (Ron) Calhoun and Barbara (Biff) Kirby; countless friends, members of the nursing family, and her loyal dog, Tressel. She is predeceased by her parents and infant sister Eleanor. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held on October 27, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Liberty Presbyterian Church, 7080 Olentangy River Rd., Delaware, OH. Rev. Rebecca Hart, celebrant. Phyllis requested that everyone wear scarlet or gray.
