Fowle Robert M. Fowle, age 93, of Lancaster, died October 7, 2013 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, born October 5, 1920 in Columbus. Preceded in death by parents Arthur and Ruth McDowell Fowle, wife Mary Daugherty Fowle, son Charles, infant daughter Mary, brother Arthur Jr. and sister Miriam Near. Survived by children, Tony, Susan (Glenn) Opalenik, Mary Agnes (Dan) Murphy, David, Edward (Tris Oliver), Ruth (Craig) Cuckler; 22 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Graduated from University High School in 1939 and from The Ohio State University in 1945. He was a retired High School teacher of 39 years and a renowned coach of most sports for 68 years. His notable accomplishments include the induction into the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame, five state championships, which include one high school basketball at St. Aloysius and four state championships for high school track at Wehrle. I taught for 5 years at Wehrle HS with Bob and loved his down-to-earth sense of humor. He was a great guy who knew how to reach young people and help them succeed in Industrial Arts and Track. I am proud to have known this wonderful person. Larry Albanese

To Dave and Family,
I know this day can bring pain and suffering remembering your Father and his legacy. On this day I must say I know how much your Dad meant to you, so today I hope you can remember the love and joy associated with your Dad. Although I only met him a few times, I know how you looked up to him and the influence he had on your life. Stay well my friend. You Dad was and will forever be proud of you.

I was a member of Coach Fowle St. Aloysius 1954 State Champion Basketball Team. During four years (1952-1956) at St. Al's I was coached by Coach Fowle in basketball, football, track, wrestling,and weight-lifting. He was a true mentor and inspiration. I have always had the highest respect for his dedication to his profession. He was gave of himself for the betterment of others.

God bless you Bob.

I thank the Lord to have had the opportunity to have been one of his students (science, mechanical drafting, and track). He made learning wonderful and fun for the only two girls in his classes. God's speed Mr. Fowle.

Mr. Fowle touched many lives. He lived his passion both as a coach and teacher in and out of the classroom. I am honored to have spent the brief time with him as a student. Condolences to his family and all who admired and loved him.

I had Mr. Fowle for psychology my senior year at Wehrle. What I thought was going to be a difficult subject to understand, turned out to be the most interesting class and my favorite. Whenever his name is mentioned, whether it's friends retelling a story from high school years or a lesson they were fortunate enough to have learned early on, it's always with fondness and respect. His life touched so many and we're all the better for having been a part of his.

As you celebrate the life of your father, grandfather and great grandfather, may the many wonderful memories he created make you smile. My three brothers & I had the honor of running cross country and track for Coach Fowle at Wehrle. He taught us lifelong lessons about working hard and setting goals. Our practice runs used to include "go to Scioto Downs and back," so when they moved the State cross country championships there, I was pleased to see Coach Fowle in attendance in his green Wehrle State Champions windbreaker! Then at a meet at New Albany where my son was running, I will never forget watching this older guy stumble and fall down, only to find Coach Fowle in the same Wehrle windbreaker suffering heat exhaustion!! I still have my Wehrle Track Champions windbreaker and I will only wear it now in the fond memory of Coach Fowle. May God bless his soul and your family.

Mr. Fowle was our coach in New Lexington(St. Rose & St. Aloysius) from 1951 to 1959 (less the 56-57 year when he was in Hebron). He coached football, basketball, baseball, track, wrestling & weightlifting. He had everything in his car but a dead body, e. g., discus, shot put, soy beans, broken hurdles, baseballs, footballs, etc. He was a fine teacher and coach and left us all with many wonderful and often recounted memories. May the Lord bless all of you at this trying time. Sincerely, Ron Harris, St. Aloysius, Class of '59.

Bob Fowle was the first man to see the possibilities I had as a 14 yr. old, lanky kid who needed a little guidance and direction.
As a result of his belief in me, I went on to have a sucessful career in several areas and become a good person. Aah, the times he drove beside me in his car while running through Hamilton Township yelling out my speed and to pick it up some. :-)
My condolences to his family and others close to him. The world has lost a true giant of a man.

I was a student, player and friend of Coach Fowle. I fondly remember he kept everything important on an envelope in his coat pocket. The fun we had in his Mech. Drawing class, traveling to basketball scrimmages crammed into his blue station wagon with old shot puts rolling around and perhaps a broken hurdle stashed in the back as well. We affectionately called him "uncle Bob" and while we didn't always appreciate it then, many of us came to love the lessons he taught us. A great one has left us and we are all saddened by his passing and joyful that he was a huge part of our lives. Thanks for the memories and God bless the Fowle family and friends. David, Ed and family;

Mr. Fowle was a great influence on my life on many levels. He was far more interested in my developement as a person than merely as an athlete, and gave me sound advice during my formative years.

He was always caring and after my college career, always wanted to know what I was up to and how well I was taking care of my family.

My wife, Sheryle Lynn (Jordan) was his statistician for 4 years at Wehrle as well, and both my children, now 30 and 28 got to meet and know the man who has had as great an influence on my life as anyone.

He will not be forgotten.

Great man, who left many great memories with those of us lucky enough to have spent time around him. Always positive and supportive as a coach and a teacher.
