Griffing Penelope S. Griffing, age 90, died on November 10, 2013. She earned a PhD in psychology from The Ohio State University in 1974 and began serving on the OSU faculty as Professor of Early Childhood Development in 1975. She retired as Emeritus Professor in the College of Human Ecology in 1990. Because of her keen interest in bettering the lives of children, she served on the Board of Trustees of the Child Development Council of Franklin County since its inception. After her retirement from OSU she served as an active member of the People to People Ambassador Delegation, traveling to Cape Town, South Africa; Russia; and Cuba with other early childhood development experts. In addition, she traveled to Reggio Emilia, Italy to study early childhood education under the auspices of The Ohio State Department of Education. She is survived by her four children, Cynthia O'Brien of Saline, Michigan, Steven Griffing of Columbus, Ohio, Joan Griffing Nicholas of Harrisonburg, Virginia and Deborah Griffing Heller of Sunbury, Ohio; and her six grandchildren, Luke O'Brien, Regina O'Brien, Desiree O'Brien, Breton Nicholas, Zoe Heller, and Ava Heller. Her husband of 44 years, Bruce Griffing, preceded her in passing. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 21, at 2 p.m. at the First Community Village Sanders Center, 1801 Riverside Drive, Columbus. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Goodwill Columbus Art Studio Program for the disabled.
