Dorothy (Lillegraven) Young Obituary
Young Dorothy (Lillegraven) Young, age 94, died at her home at Trillium in Columbus on December 9, 2013. She was born on June 26, 1919 in Madison Lake, MN to the late Johannes and Dagmar (Carlson) Lillegraven. After graduating from Mankato High School, she attended Mankato Teachers' College, and then moved to Chicago to work at Zenith Radio. There her beauty was recognized by George Young, originally from Zanesville, OH, and they began a life-long adventure. They were married on September 12, 1942 in Mankato before George left to serve in the Army. Following the end of the war, they began their family in Cincinnati with Donn and Carol and Louisville where Dixie was born. She and George moved to Columbus in 1949 where they bought a house in the Eastmoor area. After seeing all their children graduate from Ohio State, they hit the road in their motor home traveling throughout the US, Mexico, and New Zealand. After George's death in 2003, she traded in their 32' RV for a cozier 24' RV and at the age of 85 drove alone from Gahanna to spend the winter on the beach in Xpu-Ha, Mexico, 50 miles south of Cancun. With the exception of prune whip, Dorothy was an outstanding cook known for her red velvet birthday cakes and Sunday New England boiled dinner. She kept her family in style sewing suits, dresses (including Dixie's wedding gown), pants, and Halloween costumes. She was an outstanding bridge and SkipBo player, particularly if money was involved, and never missed having a margarita at happy hour. She was a 60+ year member of Fairmoor Presbyterian Church and helped serve thousands of meals from the church kitchen. Dorothy is survived by her children, Donn of Columbus, Carol (Dale) Boody of Canon City, CO, and Dixie (Tom) Race of Eads, TN, grandchildren Amanda Young and Rachel Kaldor of Columbus, Jeff Boody of Boulder, CO, Andrea Boody of Weatherford, TX, and Robert Race of Ashville, NC. She is predeceased by her husband George, and daughter-in-law Phyllis Kaldor Young. A memorial gathering celebrating her life will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, December 15 in the lobby at Trillium, 3500 Trillium Crossing, Columbus, OH 43235. Her family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Trillium and Ohio Health Hospice for their outstanding care allowing her to be independent and active until her death. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Dorothy's memory to the Phyllis Kaldor Hope and Inspiration Tribute Fund #313922 at The Ohio State University Foundation, 660 Ackerman Rd., PO Box 183112, Columbus, OH 43218-3112. Arrangements entrusted to DAY & MANOFSKY FUNERAL SERVICE.
