Davis Lt. Col. Richard Burke Davis, 82, of Columbus, died January 17, 2014, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 19, 1931 in Martins Ferry, Ohio. Predeceased by parents Howard Roscoe and Eva Burke Davis, brother Jack, parents-in-law James and Helen Pethtel, brothers-in-law Eugene Miskinis and Jerry Davis. A graduate of Capital University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and was a cheerleader, Dick attended graduate school at The Ohio State University and graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College. Following careers as a teacher and textbook publisher's representative, he was employed by the U.S. Army. He proudly served in the Army National Guard of Ohio, 83d United States Army Reserve Command and the Ohio Naval Militia. A 50-year member of the Mt. Vernon Commandery No. 1 Knights Templar, the Grand Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio in Worthington and other organizations, Dick enjoyed traveling, sailing, snorkeling, hiking, history, music, playing the harmonica, solving puzzles and flying his Cessna airplane. He is survived by his wife, Marion, a chemist whom he met during college and married on Thanksgiving of 1959; "favorite" daughter, Jennifer; brother, Donald (Rose); sister, Laura Lee; sister-in-law, Ilse Miskinis; nieces, nephews and treasured granddog, Sophie Bella Dolce.
