J. Costin Obituary

Costin J Richard "Dick" Costin, D.O., age 87, of Upper Arlington, died on Saturday, August 9, 2014. He was born August 14, 1926 in Van Wert, Ohio to Orrie and Lena (Royer) Costin. He graduated from Bellefontaine High School, Miami University, and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was the devoted husband to Martha K. (Andre) Costin, who preceded him in death. He will be deeply missed by his children, David A. Costin (Dawn Koehlinger) and Dr. Richard R. Costin (Barbara Sivright); three grandchildren, Jonathan, Carolyn and Katie; and several nieces and nephews. As well as a loving husband, father and grandfather, he spent his life serving others through his work as a distinguished surgeon and educator at Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, since 1950. He served as the Surgical Resident Program Director, Surgery Department Chairman, Medical Staff President, and Hospital and Foundation Trustee. He was the President of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and President of the Ohio Osteopathic Association. He was a member and Chairman of the Board at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, helping to lead it from college to university status, where the Costin Institute for Osteopathic Medical Educators was founded and named in his honor in 2003. He was past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation and served as a member until his death. He dedicated his life to promoting the health and well-being of the community and positively influenced the lives of many. As a lover of the arts, he was an avid gardener who enjoyed landscaping and growing orchids. He was a gifted musician, playing both the trumpet and piano, and enjoyed leading "The Docs of Dixieland" jazz band. A memorial service, celebrating his life, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2014 at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd., Columbus, OH, where the family will receive friends immediately following the service in Brownlee Hall. The Reverend James Long will officiate. If desired, contributions may be made to The Osteopathic Heritage Foundation, 1500 Lakeshore Dr., Columbus, OH 43204 in his memory. My condolences to Dr Rick Costin and the Costin family. I knew Dr. Dick Costin professionally for over fifty years, and although he was known as an outstanding diagnostician and surgeon,he was lesser known as the trumpet playing band leader of the "DOCS OF DIXIELAND". He is missed. Milt Setnar,DO.

Our sincerest sympathies to Dick's family. My father and he were great friends and the founding fathers of Surgery and Gynecology. He will be deeply missed, but the great memories live on. Our mother Cherie also sends her thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies.

....what a great life! As a former resident, not a week goes by, even still after 37 years, that I don't reflect on some lesson learned in the mid-70's from Dr. Costin. I have always longed to duplicate his quiet dignity and competent manner. He will be missed, but he will live on in the surgeons he trained, and the patients that he helped, indirectly, through those he taught.

Dr. Costin was quietly effective as a leader, never overbearing and always able to find the best in people. He was a pleasure to be with him. As a leader, he was one of the best board chairs with whom I've worked.

Dr. Costin was a great wonderful kind friend. I want to extend my deepest sorrow and condolences to the Costin family. He was a kind hearted man who taught me many things. We were enjoyed each other's company. I'm truly blessed to have been a small part in the last chapter of his life. He will be missed, God Bless and prayers.
