Ernest Johnson Obituary

Johnson Dr. Ernest W. Johnson, MD, age 90, passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2014, surrounded by family and friends, spending his final hours in the rehab center he helped build, Ohio State University's Dodd Hall. He was born in New Jersey, on January 12, 1924 to parents Ernest and Harriet (Burgess) Johnson, who soon moved to Akron, Ohio, where he spent his youth. Preceding him in death are Joanne, his wife of 62 years, his daughter Jill, and son Walter. Left to mourn his passing are his daughter, Amy (Kevin) Scott of Pataskala, Ohio; wife, Susie Cull; niece, Beverly (Ron) Kristoff; nephew, Jeff (Glenda) Church of Taris, TN; and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Known to all as 'Ernie,' he was a longtime resident of Upper Arlington, devoted member of Riverside United Methodist Church, and servant to the Lord. After graduating from Akron Central High in 1941, Ernie earned distinction as the first draftee selected by the northern Ohio draft board and went on to serve his country as an Army captain in the south Pacific, returning home to Ohio upon war's end. Enrolling at The Ohio State University in 1946, Ernie began what became one of the University's most valuable and enduring relationships first as a student, then as a faculty member. Spanning 57 years, lasting until his retirement (his last of many), in 2012, his tenure is considered the longest in the history of the Ohio State University. After attaining his medical license, Ernie was awarded a fellowship from the National Polio Foundation in 1954. In 1957 he began working on what was then, the world's first medical-school program devoted to the study of physical medicine and rehabilitation, PM&R. Ernie devoted his life to the care of patients suffering from spinal cord injury, Parkinson's, brain injury, stroke, amputation, polio and post polio. He was instrumental in building Dodd Hall into the nationally recognized medical facility that it is today. Serving as PM&R chairman for 37 years beginning in 1963, Ernie is credited as Co-founder of the "creative living" apartment complex, designed to allow disabled adults in need of assistance to live independently. When it opened in 1974, Creative Living was the first complex of its kind in the nation. Additionally he was the world's foremost authority on the use of electromyography (EMG), a diagnostic tool used in diagnosis of nerve and muscle conditions. Author/Co-author of over 150 published articles, 40-year editor of the OSU medical journal and writer of the much beloved "Ernie's Editorials", Dr. Johnson is acknowledged internationally as a preeminent physician within the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. His illustrious career includes a list of awards, accomplishments, titles and distinctions too numerous to list. Though well-deserved, he placed little importance on such accolades. His medical advice was sought by US presidents, world leaders, Coach Hayes, and tens of thousands of everyday people, all of whom he treated with the same respect and compassion. Above all else, Ernie considered himself a teacher. He instructed over 300 Physical Medicine residents, instilling in them his "patient-first" philosophy. To his residents he was the "Chief Wheelie" (see YouTube video "How to do a Wheelchair Wheelie"). To honor him, graduates of the residency program established the Dr. Ernest W. Johnson chair, in the department of PM&R. To his family he was husband, father, grandpa and hero. We loved him dearly, and his absence leaves us broken-hearted. Visitation will be held Friday, November 21, 2014 from 3-5 and 6-9 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus, OH. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Riverside United Methodist Church, 2701 Zollinger Rd., Columbus. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ernie's memory to Creative Living, 150 W. 10th Ave., Columbus, OH 43201-2093 or to OSU Wexner Medical Centers Ernest W. Johnson MD Residency Support Fund, checks made payable to OSU Foundation sent to OSU WMC Development, Kyle Sebastian 660 Ackerman Rd. Columbus, OH 43202. Dr. Ernest W. Johnson was my first book teacher when I start to learn EMG. His book was easy to understand and I learned all the ENMG principles on it. When I first met him personally (Montreal, 1995) I was so proud, because he came to visit the poster I had presented about CTS. In San Francisco (2011) we had a photo together. He usually came alone and read all the posters. Quite a modesty.

Ernie inspired me back when I was a medical student, and his passion for teaching others was beyond reproach. Now that I'm continuing my residency training in PM&R, I often think of what a blessing it was to have known him every time I read up on EMG. He inspired me to always stay positive, and to deliver that message in patient care. He is deeply missed, but greatly loved by all who knew him.

Ernie's love was uncircumscribed... it included all.

He made each of us feel his boundless charisma, magnetism, and healing power.
Physicians at his memorial service spoke
of his irrepressible humor, great generosity, infinite zeal, the very short distance between his visualizing a problem and his working on the solution.
He was one of the first workers for handicap access at OSU, one of many areas of patient rights for which he worked.
He counseled his residents never to extinguish
hope in a patient, never to use the phrase 'wheelchair confined'. He referred to wheelchairs as liberators.
He was a tireless and brilliant doctor whose international renown began when he invented numerous devices to ease the pain of polio victims. He believed that healing power was written in the hands... he saw no disconnection between his strong Christian beliefs and palmistry, which he hoped would become one tool in evaluating student admissions to the medical school.

He had the gift of laying on of the hands, transmitting healing with his touch. He didn't care for money, only for giving 100% every day of his life to those in pain.
Later in life he began to
recommend vegetarian diet to some, vegan diet to others.
Thank you God for lending him to us.

I am saddened to hear of Dr Johnson's passing. I attended his Super Emg off/on for years and was looking forward to seeing Earnie at another course. But now I will miss him. I assumed he would always be teaching because I thought of him as ageless-and will continue to think of him in that way. Preston Harrison MD Tyler,TX

My late father, Wayman R. Spence, M.D., was a product of Dr. Johnson's residency program in the early 1960s. Beyond the medical training he received, my father valued Ernie for his original intellect and infectious curiosity. Dr. Johnson shaped the young man who would later shape me.

My father, the late Wayman Spence MD, was a product of Dr. Johnson's residency program in the early '60s, but far beyond his training my dad valued "Ernie" for his infectious curiosity and unconventional intellect. Dr. Johnson shaped the young man who would later shape me.

Dr. Johnson I experienced many years ago when my back pains could be endured no more. He treated me as a person - as well as a patient. That makes for the doctor of one's dreams, a doctor who loved his patients, a doctor who never knew a stranger. He wanted a full life without pain for me and helped me thru times to get there! There's a special place in Heaven and in history for you, Ernie! God bless you and your family.

I am very sorry for your loss. I am one of Ernie's former residents and I am very grateful for all that he taught me and all that he did to develop this field. One of the things that I admired about him was his concern for his residents and former residents. He could remember the names, not only of his former residents but their spouses and where they currently were at. He even remembered that my wife Kathleen was an archivist.
I tried to emulate him as a residency program director here at the University of Missouri. He influenced many lives and will be missed.

Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. Even though we only knew Ernie for a short time, his kind and loving spirit was easy to see. He loved his family dearly and nothing would stop him from getting out to watch his grandchildren play sports.

Ernie was a great inspiration to me and a dear colleague. His infectious smile and kind words were always what you received along with his warmth and humor. He lead our field from its early beginnings to maturity. Many people around the country like me, were mentored by him in special ways.

I will miss him.

Ernie's humor filled my room when I was in rehab at Crown Point in the Spring and he and Susie visited me. I have thought of him many times since then. I felt happy for my friend Susie, Ernie's wife spending his last days with him.

Ernie Johnson was one of my oral board examiners in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He made it memorable and actually a fun experience. As I stood outside waiting for the exam to begin, the door flung open and a hand was thrust at me with a big grin on his face! As I shook his hand he pulled me into the room and the exam commenced. I was honored to have Ernie Johnson as one of my examiners. I will always remember and endeavor to show the same enthusiasm for our specialty and warm-heartedness for others as Dr. Johnson did to me. He will be missed. I pray God comforts you, his family, in this time of loss. May you also celebrate a life well-lived!

30 some years ago I went to see Dr. Johnson as a patient for a low back problem. I was contemplating having having surgery. He told me that I did not need surgery but that I needed to start doing exercises that he recommended. I did not have surgery and I am still doing the exercises to this day. It was the best medical advice that I have ever gotten. I am forever grateful to Ernie. He was a delightful and positive human being. I will miss him.

As a delegate of Brazil to the IFCN, I am sending sympathies to the family. Personally, I had studied his book in the eighties. Dr. Johnson always visited my posters in the AANEMs meetings and gave me a honour of a photo with me.
