Akers, Jesse Murray - Greenville  
GREENVILLE – Jesse Murray Akers, 76, died peacefully May 17, 2015. He was born in Bessemer, Alabama, to the late Jesse Curtis Akers and Mary Elaine Walker Akers. Murray graduated in 1957 from Tupelo High School. He received his bachelor of public administration degree in 1964 from the University of Mississippi and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1967. While attending law school, he served as comment editor for the Mississippi Law Journal, was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, and a past president of Phi Delta Phi. Murray was admitted to practice before the Mississippi Supreme Court, the United States District Court, the United States Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He was a longtime member of the Mississippi State Bar, the American Association for Justice, a Fellow with the Mississippi Bar Foundation and a past president for both the Washington County Bar and the Mississippi Association for Justice. Murray has served as the special assistant attorney general law clerk for the Mississippi Supreme Court, assistant United States attorney for the Mississippi Northern District, assistant district attorney for the 4th Circuit Court District, and has had his private practice in Greenville since 1970. He was a pilot in the Army National Guard and retired from service as a captain. He loved Greenville and its people and was a strong advocate for those who sought his help. He was a longtime member and a past president of both the Greenville Park Commission and the Greenville Kiwanis Club. He also served as a past commodore for the Greenville Yacht Club and was currently chairman of the Crime Stoppers of Washington County Inc. Murray loved God and his church, First Baptist of Greenville. There he served on the Finance Committee and was recently elected to serve as a deacon, a position he treasured more than any other honor he had received. In addition to his parents, Murray was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Elaine Akers, and one brother, James Milton Akers. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia Evans Akers; his children, James Michael Akers (Alyson) of Texarkana, Texas, Teri Akers Ramsey of Greenville, and Jennifer Akers Mitchell of Crofton, Maryland; one brother, Michael Dean Akers (Libba) of Tupelo; grandchildren, John Marshall Akers, Jared Christopher Akers and Jessica Ryan Ramsey; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 9:45 a.m. today, May 21, at First Baptist Church, Greenville, with the funeral immediately following at 11 a.m. A graveside service will be held later today at Union Cemetery in Lee County. Smith Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers are Darrell Ballard, Michael Cardinel, Billy Gist, Trent Hutcheson, Joe Johnson, Larry Lowe and Ed Norton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude, the American Cancer Society or to the Building Fund at First Baptist Church in Greenville.

Breland Sr., John O. - Ripley  
RIPLEY – John O. Breland Sr., 78, well-known resident of the Ripley community and beloved teacher and coach for many years before his retirement, died Thursday, May 21, 2015, at his home. A native of Clay County, Mr. Breland was a devoted member of Springdale Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran. Services, with military honors, celebrating the life of Mr. Breland, will be at 2 p.m. today, May 23, in the Heritage Chapel of The Ripley Funeral Home with interment in Tippah Memorial Gardens. Mr. Breland was a graduate of Delta State University, received his Masters degree from Mississippi State University and an Administrative degree from the University of Mississippi. He was married August 23, 1964, to the former Jane Morgan, who survives. A resident of Ripley for more than 45 years, Mr. Breland was respected by his community, students and many friends. A family oriented person, Mr. Breland is survived by his wife; his children, Lisa Childers (Rocky), Johnny Breland (Christine) and Stephen Breland, all of Ripley; nine grandchildren and one great-grandaughter. Brown, Jerry - Amory  
AMORY – Jerry Brown, 71, died on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at his home. Born October 3, 1943, in Trenton, N.J., he was a son of Belton A. Brown and Novia O. Powell Pennington. Before his retirement, he worked as an electrical engineer in the manufacturing industry, traveling extensively with his job. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Frankfort, Germany, during the Vietnam era. He was of the Baptist faith. Graveside services were held 2 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2015, at the East Fulton (White Church) Cemetery in Fulton with Bro. Jim Jones officiating. Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home of Amory was in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include one son, Scott Allen Brown of North Carolina; one daughter, Stacy Miles (Jason) of Winthrop Harbor, Ill.; four sisters, Brenda Weathersby (Larry) of Caledonia, Karen Pipkin (Eddie) of Amory, Kathy West of Hamilton and Linda Vandiver (Doyle) of Smithville; two grandchildren, Kylee and Ashley Miles; an uncle, James Brown of Paradise, Calif.; and special friends, Ricky and Judy Adams and Eugene and Sharon Haney. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Keith Pennington; one brother, Tony Brown; and a brother-in-law, Jimmy West. Larry Weathersby was a pallbearer. Freese, Allen - Booneville  
BOONEVILLE – Allen Paul Freese, 74, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville. He was born April 20, 1941, to Carl and Mable Freese in Austin, Minnesota. He served in the Navy for 22 1/2 and retired as Chief Warrant Officer 4. He was a surface warfare officer, and earned the Navy Commendation Medal and the Achievement Medal with Combat V. Allen was a member of the Church of Christ. He loved being around his family and always enjoyed a good military or western show. Services will be today, May 22, 2015, at 11 a.m. in the Booneville Funeral Home Chapel with Friar Brian Freese, OP, officiating and Keith Freese delivering the eulogy with military honors following in the Corinth National Cemetery at 1 p.m. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Freese; three sons, Keith Freese (Stephanie) of Booneville, Brian Freese of Athens, Georgia, Andrew Surratt of Corinth; three daughters, Kristina Freese of Phoenix, Arizona, Suzanne Littlejohn of Monks Corner, South Carolina, and Brittany Baswell (Todd) of Glen; six grandchildren, Mason Freese, Elizabeth Littlejohn, Abigail Littlejohn, Jeremiah Baswell, Luke Baswell, and Maggie Baswell; and one sister, Janet Wymore (John) of Clearlake Oaks, California. He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Gracia Freese; and his parents, Carl and Mable Freese. Dr. Nathan Baldwin will be serving as honorary pallbearer.
