Dr. Harry Doxsey "Doc" Wood Jr.(1924 - 2014)

NEW ALBANY – Dr. Harry ""Doc"" Doxsey Wood Jr., 89, died Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Union County Health and Rehab in New Albany. He was born Oct. 21, 1924, in New Albany to Harry Doxsey Wood Sr. and Jamie Taylor Wood. He graduated from high school in New Albany in May 1942, then enlisted in the Navy Air Corps on Dec. 13, 1942. He was medically discharged due to a shoulder injury in 1943. He took two years of pre-med at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. He then did four years, including two years of internship, and graduated from Carver Chiropractor College in Oklahoma City, Okla. He opened his office in New Albany in 1949 and practiced for 55 years. He was a member of New Albany Presbyterian Church.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, at New Albany Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Everett and Stephen Ewing officiating. Burial will be in the Vista Memorial Park. United Funeral Service in New Albany is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Charmian Keith Wood, whom he married on June 14, 1986; a son, Harry Doxsey Wood III (Donna); a daughter, Donna Grace Wood Sappington; a stepdaughter, Melanie Nicole Scholle Wood; 11 grandchildren, Jerri ""Rusty"" Sappington Neely (John), Jeff Sappington (Kim), Crystal Wood, Jamie Wood Hood (Jeremy), Brandy Wood York (John), Suzanne Wood Butler (Jeff), Harry Doxsey Wood IV, James Curtis Wood, Mike Merritt (Anita), Michelle Merritt Gray (Randy) and Debra Merritt; four stepgrandchildren, Lakan Nicole Young, Lauren Sonja Misson, Ashton Timothy Misson and Madelyn Marie Misson; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Eva Goode Wood, whom he married on May 15, 1946; a daughter, Linda Jane Wood Merritt; a stepdaughter, Sonja Lee Scholle Young; and a brother, James Taylor Wood.
Pallbearers will be Mike Merritt, James Wood, Harry Wood, Shane Young, Jeff Butler, Brian Misson, John York and Jeremy Hood. Honorary pallbearers will be the elders of the New Albany Presbyterian Church, Hugh Tate, James Smith, William Hill, Delmar Watson, Steve Wood and Eldridge Littlejohn.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. today at New Albany Presbyterian Church.
In honor of Dr. Wood's service to his country, United Funeral Service will fly the U.S. Navy flag during his visitation and his service.
